Thankfully I checked the Arkeia documentation before I deleted my old harddrive. It seems that Arkeia has no way to read tapes without having the Arkeia genereated database files available. If I had deleted my old drive I would have lost the tape indexes rendering my backup tapes useless. It seems to me that any decent backup program should be able to re-create the indexes from tape if need be. I'd rather wait awhile for it to read the tape than to not have access to my backups! Their suggestion is to just tar up their config files on a separate tape because you will need those files for disaster recovery. They also say that they are working on a version of Arkeia where you don't have to do this. Thanks for listening. I like BRU for exactly the reasons you pointed out. Not a lot of extra crap to deal with. BRU is a nearly complete replacement for tar, and acts much the same way (similar command line structure). -- -=|JP|=- "Why, oh, why didn't I take the blue pill?" I'll second that. I have been using BRU for over 7 years on various versions of Unix/linux and found it rock solid. The thing I like is the way it automatically validates any backup made to ensure the data is correct. It has saved my butt quite a few times. There is also the taper package on the cdrom distro if you want a realy plian tape back up system , that way you can just reload the distro and package and restore. At 10:58 AM 6/30/2000 -0500, Jon Pennington wrote:
