[opensuse] ATI Radeon FireGL V5200, IBM/Lenovo Z61p, X won't start
Hi list, - SUSE10.3/KDE/plain vanilla. I just downloaded from the ATI-driver site, the "ati-driver-installer-8.443.1-x86.x86_64.run" I switched to runlevel 3 and installed it. Without a hitch. (I tried from within X also, same results as below stated...) From within a terminal window, as root, I do: aticonfig --initial - this goes well, it modifies xorg.conf and all. When I subsequently start X, my entire machine goes into a black, dead state. Black screen, all terminals are dead. Network is alive, I can SSH into machine. Here, as root, "init 3" doesn't do anything. Only the wintendo solution works...hold the off keydown to switch it off. Then, when booting, set it to boot into level 3. I'm back into text mode. I may now copy my old (I DID save it) xorg.conf file into place and start X. But that's not much fun. When I do: lspci, I get: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc M56GL [Mobility FireGL V5200] I done my Google :-), no vail...Any hints...?? -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Med venlig hilsen/Best regards Verner Kjærsgaard Novell Certified Linux Professional 10035701 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

- problem partially solved... - I found this driver...: ati-driver-installer-8-01-x86.x86_64.run - this one runs. I think it gives me 3D accel. Don't really know, 'cause after installing compiz, I don't have the "Compiz Fusion Icon" in my menu structure? The two others are there (CompizConfig and Emarald Theme). And I can't find compiz-manager on the system... Don't use the 8.44 driver, it has resolution problems. The 8.01 (8.45.4 driver works great) As you found below.

You have 3D accel it is in the driver. Sax always shows the 3D box grayed. Don't worry about it. openSuSE has the drivers already built and they work fine. 13:42 Rankin-P35a~> rpm -qa | grep fglrx x11-video-fglrxG01-8.45.4-0.2 ati-fglrxG01-kmp-default-8.45.4_2.6.22.16_0.1-0.2 Just make sure you have the ATI Repository added to yast/zypper: http://www2.ati.com/suse/10.3 See my other reply to you for starting compiz. Make sure you check out the following widgets in compiz settings manager after you have it running: Zoom Desktop Cube Reflection Splash (just turn it on to confirm compiz starts in an easy way) Ring Switcher Shift Switcher Annotate Stay away from 'Fade to Desktop' I have run into a couple of problems with it. -- David C. -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Med venlig hilsen/Best regards Verner Kjærsgaard Novell Certified Linux Professional 10035701 I have runned into this problem , because they change the method for running compiz. If you look at the compiz fusion area, it tells you to
create ~/.config/compiz/compiz-manager COMPIZ_OPTIONS="--no-libgl-fallback --ignore-desktop-hints --replace" LIBGL_ALWAYS_INDIRECT=1 WHITELIST="fglrx“ with the above option. After you create it, try running compiz-manager to see if it works. If it does, then add it as an item in your session. -- Joseph Loo jloo@acm.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
