RE: [SLE] suse only great as workstation not as server??
Hi, ** Go to the next computer store and count Windows vs. Linux software. Just ** because you and me don't need that kind of stuff (well, I'd like that tax ** prep. software...) doesn't mean it's all useless. Why the hell do SuSE produce such a quality piece of software such as SuSE Linux then? ...and why do they bundle everything you've ever needed in one box. After the purchase of SuSE 6.3, I have not downloaded _any_ extra software except updates/patches. You dont need the extra boxes. One wall of SuSE and the other of hardware. Why not replace 100 boxes of software with one? You're already doing it! The only software which I do use outside SuSE is Macromedia Studio (Fireworks+Dreamweaver) and that's all done at an adequate speed on my 180MHz PPC Mac (Bring on SuSE PPC :-) ** Also, try multimedia with Linux. I'm not talking about playing an mp3, ** that works, but that's about it. 99% of people need to learn that a computer _cannot_ perform as well as dedicated hardware. I dont play CDs on my PC, and neither do I watch DVDs. The separate hardware is much better than any third-rate PC hardware which is the 'cheapest' botch to get the job done. (Particularly pointing at AOpen CD/DVD drives :-) Would you listen to a CD on £7 speakers? Do you see any major dance music artists using a PC? Nope, they have samplers, synths and dedicated sequencers. They may hook up their Atari for a bit of MIDI though. Why do people automatically assume that a PC should do everything? It is after all a glorified calculator. Despite common belief, games should have seperate hardware. Look at the Sony Playstation 2 and tell me there is a PC out there for that kind of cash that will do that job that well. Another thing, is how many people really need the Internet? Very few. People over here in the UK are getting into serious debt after purchasing a rediculously over-powered PC which they plug in the wall and forget. The speed increases are a totally 'I look bigger than thou' war. Plus the bloat of Microsoft coming along and dumping more pointless extensions to make the OS better or worse all the time. How many millions of lines of code. Personally, I have an Acorn A5000, which has a 2Mbit ROM Resident Operating System with a windowed GUI, unrivalled hardware support and runs on a whopping 25MHz ARM3 Microprocessor. It runs fast, it never crashes and it's very easy to use This quite hapilly churns it's 420Mbyte drive and renders 1024x768 images at the same speed of my PC (It has an evil big Floating Point accelerator). ** And no, there's no equivalent for MS ** 2000, definitely not. Yep - Anything that bad is unique. ** Yes, it crashes, but people use it anyway, and ** there's a reason for it. Why should we have to put up with it though? Does UNIX crash this often? ** Also, the pair Exchange-Server/Outlook has ** functionalities Linux does not have, far beyond simple mail transport. It ** doesn't matter that you and I don't like Exchange servers, facts are ** facts. Talking bad about the competition doesn't help a lot. How about Lotus Notes / Domino - That is beyond anything that Outlook is ever capable of (I am using it to write this! - check the headers if you wish). My opinion:- A desktop pc is for the desk i.e. the desk is for working on. If you want to do anything else, get the hardware outside the PC to do it. Basically, all the basic productivity you require is available in Linux, and what you don't have, you shouldn't require. More software = more trouble = more cost.
