I'm scanning a bunch of pages, and I noticed that the text in the reverse of the page gets in the photo made of the front page. It occurred to me to cover the white plastic lid of my scanner with a black spongy layer, and it works wonders. The scanned page doesn't get material from the back, or very little, depending on paper thickness.
My old Epson Perfection 4870 Photo has a detachable plate in the lid which is white on one side and black on the other, but I'm sure this is accidental and was not intended as a helpful design feature. Roger

Interesting. Thanks :) I just discovered that the white plate in my Epson Stylus Photo RX620 is also detachable and black on the other side, but it's clearly not intended to be reversed. But behind it is ... a whole plastic frame for aligning slides when scanning them! Who knew! :) I've had this device for many years ...

Mine seems to be glued (Epson Perfection 1650). -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 15.2 x86_64 at Telcontar)

My Epson Perfection V600 Photo has a removable plate, but the bracket is designed so that it can't be inserted backwards. Black paper works for me. Regards, Lew
