It's missing from my 9.2 --> 9.3 upgrade together with /etc/init.d/udev, but udevd is running. can anyone confirm that this is correct as I can't find them on the DVD. The admin guide page 346 says there should be a /sbin/hotplug, I only have /sbin/hotplugeventrecorder. rebuilding from source rpm udev-053-15.2, no /sbin/hotplug and I'm unable to access any USB devices. lsusb comes up empty on both 64-bit (x86_64 install) and 32-bit laptops, so I don't even see the USB ports. I first noticed it on the USB ext 120G, then on the webcam and kodak DX3600, the 120G is now up on 9.2 x86. Regards Sid. -- Sid Boyce ... The hotplug scheme changed in 9.3. I haven't seen the manual so I don't know what it says, but in 9.3 hotplug events are handled by udevd by default. Check out the /etc/init.d/boot.udev script. While it's started, /proc/sys/kernel/hotplug is empty, since udevd steals and handles the events,. while if it's stopped that variable will have /sbin/udevsend As for your problem, which kernel modules do you have loaded? Are the USB modules loaded at all? As I mentioned in another mail, I have heard rumours of upgrades causing modules not to get loaded as they should, I'd love to get that confirmed

/proc/sys/kernel/hotplug is empty lsmod shows usbcore, pl2303 and usbserial loaded, but I had to manually load ov511 ... the webcam doesn't come active and at present I can't test the usb serial port. hald and dbus daemons are running. Perhaps HAL is a last minute change to 9.3 as the admin guide doesn't mention it, it still mentions /sbin/hotplug which is not in any of the packages. /dev/.udevdb hasn't registered any USB devices. Not even with all the modules loaded? Do you get any interesting messages in /var/log/messages ?

hal is secondary. It gets called by udev as a hotplug event
/dev/.udevdb hasn't registered any USB devices.
How about /proc/bus/usb/devices ?

Yes, the usb core stuff should show up Is the module for the usb hub loaded? Thie would be one of the modules from kernel/drivers/usb/host in the module directory for the kernel (which one depends on your chipset)

Hey Group; I am runing 9.2 and have had similar problems with USB on my HD device. I have found lsusb see it but SuSE claims it is not a block device. I have found a work around for it and that is to mount the device within about 5 minute after it has booted and I have logged in as root. It is very predictable and solved the headach. Remeber the power to the HD must be on during the bootup. Turning it on after bootup seem to only once in a while work. Also hwinfo finds it when mounted but not when it is unmounted. For me it is a SuSE problem Sid Boyce wrote:

Actually, since it is an upgrade, run this rpm -qa --qf "%{NAME} %{DISTRIBUTION}\n"|grep -v 9.3 Maybe the problem is that some packages from the previous version are hanging around disturbing things?!

What I didn't do when 9.3 first rebooted was to do another reboot. Building a kernel.org kernel and rebooting gave the same problem, next I rebooted on the SuSE kernel and it picked up all the USB devices. Back to the kernel.org kernel which didn't have an initrd as I had reiserfs etc. compiled in and seeing something in dmesg, I did mkinitrd for the 2.6.12-rc3 kernel and that sorted the problem out.
