[opensuse] Question about Thunderbird calendar
-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA256 Hi, Since the recent update to Thunderbird, it comes with the calendar "plugin" included (Lightning). Ah, ok, I wondered. So two suggestions for now: Provider for Google Calendar «Allows bidirectional access to Google CalendarThis extension allows Lightning to read and write events and tasks to a Google Calendar.» Google Calendar Tab 3.9 «Adds the Google Calendar web interface as a new tab directly into Thunderbird. Creating and viewing events works just as it would in a browser like Firefox» That's not it, I want to connect Lightning to google. So I have added "Provider for Google Calendar", and I can see my calendar data. Good! In the comments I saw that it is not suitable for professionals with a full schedule, because it blocks with so much data. Thanks :-) - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. That's why I moved to Google Calendar Tab. It's more consistent in its behaviour than Lightning. But I understand you want to use Lightning and get that to sync with your Google calendar. I don't know if you're referring to Thunderbird itself or the add-on, but if you have the calendar imported in Thunderbird/Lightning, click on the Calendar tab at the top, right-click the relevant imported calendar in the left-hand pane, then click Properties, where there is an option to Refresh Calendar every minute, 5 minutes, etc. Having said all that, I've never tried syncing a calendar myself, and I'm still holding off updating to TB 38 until I've reviewed the usual raft of gripes that appear in this ML following any major version change. :) gumb -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Well, this is Th 38.1, and the calendar comes now integrated. I had not noticed you could open the full tab, not only a panel on the right hand. Yes, I see there where to set the interval. It came set to 60 minutes; however, this is absurd: the application knows that I wrote changes, so it should send them immediately. I right click there, and near the "properties" entry I see "Synchronize calendars". I did that, but still the entries do not appear on the tablet. Now I notice a big "synchronize" button on the top, I'll try that one. [...] Nope, no go. Try again... Nothing. Well... this calendar thing is then useless to me. Read from google works, but writing does not. :-/ - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. I use about a dozen calendars in the office, and I use 30 minutes delay for calendar sync. So, twice in an hour I have a 5 minutes break in TB - you can't work with it while the sync is running. There is no such thing as multithreading... Now the calendar semms to come along as a part of TB. This shows mainly in the fact that the user interface of (the traditional part of) TB is nicely translated into German, but the UI of the former Lightning plugin is not, though the plugin itself was translated. Now I got a mixed German/English interface.
Having said all that, I've never tried syncing a calendar myself, and I'm still holding off updating to TB 38 until I've reviewed the usual raft of gripes that appear in this ML following any major version change. :)

There is a comment on the (addon?) site that says that it scales badly, like for enterprise use with hundreds of entries in the calendar. I notice that delay when Th. is syncing posts on nntp. I just tried again. I created an event in Google Calendar and saved it. I then switched to Thunderbird and in the calendar, clicked on Synchronize and the new event appeared. It wasn't more than a few seconds between creating the event and seeing it in the Thunderbird calendar. I then deleted it from the Thunderbird calendar and by the time I switched back to Google calendar, the event was gone. So, it's definitely working for me. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I think that by default, whatever calendar you have highlighted in the left pane under the Calendar tab, is the one that any new event is saved to unless you select another from the drop-down list in the Edit Event dialog. gumb -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

The issue is that I was seeing only the "today pane" on the right, something like four centimetres wide, while the rest of the window was the typical email window. I thought that was all there was. And the options in that pane are limited. Only when somebody mentioned it I found that I could see instead the whole window with the calendar, and then all the options were visible. Much nicer. I use the google calendar addon and it works great. It opens as an additional tab that you just click on the use the calendar. Thanks, but that is not what I asked about. I asked about how to sync Thunderbird own calendar (Lightning) with Google calendar. This is now solved.
