Asus A7N8X Lan not recognized by Suse 9.0 Pro
Hi All (once again), sorry to those who have seen this already & to Carlos for hijacking his thread... like i mention in the next sentence, I'm new to all of this. I'm a linux newbie who just installed suse 9.0 pro on a desktop that I built (new to all of this). Suse doesn't recognize the ethernet port on my motherboard during the initial installation, and i can't seem to get the set up right using Yast2. So here is my system: Athlon XP 2500+ Asus A7N8X (which is suppose to be fully supported for Suse according to the hardware support page) liteon DVD/ CDRW combo drive. I am dual booting w/ windows XP, home edition (it recognizes my connection) I have DSL connection through Comcast. I don't believe there is an issue w/ my internet provider because when I installed Suse onto my labtop, it recognized the hardware & also my internet connection w/o any problems or additional software. I installed the linux drivers that came w/ the motherboard.. but still no connection. I've seen some postings about this problem on other forums.. but I haven't seen a posting to help resolve the situation. If anyone has any ideas please let me know.. oh, & if you can be pretty thorough in your explaination (ie... please type out commands if they are not common) since i'm kinda new to all of this. thanks alot & cheers, Vu
Hey thiav, Try loading the NVidia NForce 2 drivers from their Website: http://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/nforce/1.0-0261/NVIDIA_nforce-1.0-0261.su... Good luck. Donald Correll thaiv@brandeis.edu wrote:

Hey Donald,
Thanks for the recommendation, but I tried this earlier & it still doesn't
recognize the lan connection. I'm getting pretty frustrated since on the Suse
website; this motherboard was listed as being fully supported. Anyways, I'll
working at it.

Hey Thiav, Re: Asus A7N8X connectivity: Your problem is most perplexing. I have the same setup and it worked great right out of the box. Have you checked to see if you have link lights and swapped the cable? Also since you have two 10/100 poerts have you tried both? Are they enabled in the Bios? My 3 Com Home Router and DLink Switch are sometimes a bit slow even balky when first connecting or after disconnecting and reconnecting but as you see I am on line. BTW I was not overwhelmed by Suse Support. Good Luck Donald thaiv@brandeis.edu wrote:

Hi Donald & anyone else who could help a newbie,
We might have different versions of the A7N8X motherboards cause mine only
has one 10/100 ports. Here's a link for the motherboard:
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-131-455&depa=1
The link light is on. I'm not sure if the port is enabled in the Bios? How
do I check?
I also just found this thread:
http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2001/02/mjb_rtl8139_24.html
I'm not quite sure how to apply it ....
I guess... i'm not sure if the module 8139too is already installed or not
and if not where to get it.
If you have any insight as to how to do this, I'd greatly appreciate it.
Thanks,
Vu

Hey Vu, I have two Asus NForce 2 A7n8x mobos. Both work fine. One is an earlier Deluxe model with all the goodies while the one I run suse Linux 9.0 is a newer, cheaper model that is a bit more stripped down, i.e. missing SDATA, and IEEE 1394 and you are right it does have only the one 10/100 port unlike my Deluxe mobo. When you boot press delete key at the prompt, (real quick) then under the advanced Tab Integrated Peripherals is Onboard Lan (Nvidia) it should be set to auto.
Here's a link for the motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=13-131-455&depa=1 The link light is on. I'm not sure if the port is enabled in the Bios? How do I check?

This is for the Realteck 8139 under Suse 7.1 The proper driver is as previously mentioned available at: http://download.nvidia.com/XFree86/nforce/1.0-0261/NVIDIA_nforce-1.0-0261.su... You should download go to root, cd over in the command line and run this on your system. It has the drivers for all NForce 2 mobos. Do not be discouraged if you have to try again, apparently lot's of other people have had problems as well. Working from the command line can be daunting but be persistent. They may run from the GUI too I forget, I know the graphics drivers should not be run from the GUI. The NVidia supplied drivers btw are nearly always better than the OEM supplied Drivers because they are constantly being updated and improved. I have had great luck previously with Realtech on other systems and other Linuxs but hardware failure can happen. One more question did you mention that your system is dual booting Win XP? If so does the port work under Windows? If it does not work and the proper drivers are loaded I hate to tell you this but you may have a hardware problem. Recheck your cable, or better swap it out. Try a different port on your hub or router as well, be patient, reboot just to be on the safe side. If it still does not work I am stumped. For most supported hardware Suse Linux does a good job of hardware detection. At my job I am a Network Technician on a large mixed network. connectivity can be a real headache at times. more often that not such issues are caused by faulty hardware. If you can try swaping out parts and see if you can restore a network connection. Good luck and let me know how it turns out. Donald

Hi Donald, So I took another stab getting the lan to work last night..& still it is a no go... didn't get your email until the morning though. Yes.. I do duel boot w/ windows XP... In XP, everything is fine... so I know it's not a hardware thing I'll check to see if the port is enabled when i get home tonight. I did hit F2 while it was booting and saw this message eth0 Failed So I have downloaded the rpm that you mentioned & I've installed it using Yast2.... it seems to install fine.. but since I can't really view (more like I don't know how to view) the log file for error I'm not totally sure. Unless, Yast2 will tell me there is an error if it runs into one. Is it better to install it from a command line.... what is the command to install the rpm from a command line? I've seen other postings about this, but never a solution... more often then not the people end the discussion w/ the fact that they purchased a new NIC for a couple of bucks & every thing worked fine after that..... an option i'm contemplating now... are there any other ethernet cards that you would recommend for suse 9.0??? thanks, vu

I have A7V8X-X motherboard, and my integrated nic works just fine. Do you have to have nvidia chipset drivers? like these ? http://www.nvidia.com/object/linux_nforce_1.0-0261 I would recommend allmost every 3Com cards ! One thing I have run into on dual boot boxen is that Windows "reboot" does not clear everything in the NIC which causes Linux to fail the setup. If you've been in the Windows side, do a complete shutdown and cold-start into Linux. This clears whatever trash Windows is leaving behind on a reboot. JimW
Hey Vu,

Sounds funny but why not. I have Win XP Pro as well as Suse 9.0 on my system and although there were a few initial headaches the Nic worked fine. If the problem persists you may have to try Suse Support again. Because it must be something you are doing in install otherwise it would not work under Windows either. As to a second Nic almost any 10/100 card should work. It is not necessary to spend $50 on a 3 com or a linksys, even a lowly DLink for $10 should work. Donald
Alright...
So I check to see if the Lan is set to Auto when it boots & indeed it is..
I've tried booting into linux fresh.. "cold-start" style... nah dah..
I've tried installing the .rpm from the command line instead of using Yast2 &
it tells me the rpm has already been installed...
Now there is one thing of interest here...
So even after I install/reinstalled the rpm... I checked in Yast2 for the set
up of my network card.. under hardware details, edit and module name ... it is
listed as being "8137too", which is what i changed it to previously from a
post that I had seen for Suse 8.1 or 7.1. So maybe.. this is where the
problem lies.. that even when installing the rpm Yast2 has never changed this
value to what it should for the actually lan connection.
Donald or any one who has a standard A7N8X motherboard, could you please check
to see what you have listed in your module name for the lan and any other info
that is listed there.
Donald do you remember when you installed Suse onto your A7N8X board wheither
it detected the lan to begin w/. I know it didn't but instead of skipping the
detection, i went ahead & chose the realtek module that was avaible on the
list at that time thinking it would work. & since installing the rpm never
changed my config it kept looking for the wrong thing..
or maybe i'm just full of crap since i'm a newbie & it should have
autodetected it by now!?
anyways.. if some one could provide w/ some info on the module name I'll give
it a go tomorrow when i get home & will let you know..
thanks & cheers,
vu
