Update on Ximian Gnome install - Part 2
I now have Evolution 0.13 and Ximian Gnome up and running on SuSE 7.2. This is the computer that early in the week could not load Evolution 0.11 in any window manager or use Gnome as an environment. After todays efforts the machine now uses KDM to determine which environment to use, including Ximian Gnome, and Evolution 0.13 works well in any session. There were some false starts, however the following appears to be a reasonable course of action. Go to Ximian web site (www.ximian.com) Products -> Downloads. Use the automatic installer for SuSE 7.2. It is possible that the installer will report a network (internet) problem, just continue on. I selected normal packages PLUS the development libraries. Do not know if you absolutely need the development libraries but previously I had needed some devel libraries in order to get Evo 0.11 working on other computers and today I selected devel libs and got Evo 0.13 working, YMMV. Even though the SuSE 7.2 computer had downloaded from Ximian on Monday it downloaded another 65 ! updates today. The Ximian installer will try to encourage you to switch to Gnome Display Manager; my preference is to leave the display manager as it is ie KDM. After Gnome is installed you will need to get the KDM to recognize Gnome as an alternate session. In KDE Control Centre as root add "gnome-session", not gnome, to the login manager. Logout of KDE and into gnome-session. When gnome is loading the first time there is a registration screen, select do not register now. Should you choose to attempt to register then the registration will crash, gnome will mostly load and the next time you login to gnome you will be greeted by the registration screen. If you deselect the registration then Ximian Gnome loads quite nicely. After gnome is loaded and the initialization is settled down, try to load Evolution (it is on the main menu or type evolution in a term) . It would not load for me reporting a Bonobo error. BTW you need to try and load Evo from a term to actually see the error messages. I used Red Carpet which is under the System menu to further update Ximian Gnome. Subscribe to the two available channels (Ximian and SuSE). From the Ximian install channel select bonobo-conf and libbonobo-conf-devel, do not know if both were required but at this point I was determined to get Evo working. From the SuSE channel I selected gnome-print as previously printing from Evo in either SuSE 7.1 or 7.2 had been problematic. After these downloads Evolution 0.13 works on SuSE 7.2. Compared to Evo 0.11, the newer beta is faster, smoother and more responsive. Passwords are remembered. Drag & drop works. Needs to be tested some but at this time it appears to only need a spell checker (still under development) to be a replacement program. -- Ralph Sanford - If your government does not trust you, rsanford@telusplanet.net - should you trust your government? <Snip> Couple of quick questions: Did you upgrade to KDE 2.2? Can KDE control center be launched through the consolde as root? Thanks, Matt

No, it is a pretty stock SuSE 7.2, I think just the Yast On Line Updates were added.
Can KDE control center be launched through the consolde as root?
Never tried. I assume if you know the command it could work.
Thanks,
Matt
