I've got a friend who is trying to send me a DDS3 tape backup (we both have HP Surestore 24i). His OS is SCO V5 and I'm on SuSE 8.0. He uses the command "tar -cvf /dev/st0" He uses the default block of 20. I have been trying to restore the tape using "tar -xvf /dev/st0" and I get to a large file and the tape cleaning light comes on and I get an I/O Error 5. I asked him to clean his drive and I the next tape, I get a little further , but the same thing happens. Once I insert the cleaning tape, the light goes out. I keep getting an Input/Output error 5 on the same file. I've tried to skip the file, but the I/O happens. I've made successful backups and restores on my system (using other (but the same type) of tapes) using both tar and a commerical product called Lone-Tar with no errors. My question: Is they some incompatibility between SuSE tar and SCO tar that I need to account for when attmepting to restore a tape? Thanks in advance for your assistance. Thanks, Stu

I've never heard of one but older versions of Sun OS tar have problems reading GNU tar archives (because Sun's tar couldn't handle non-ascii filenames or something like that) so it's possible. It sounds more like the tape drive is just really dirty or the media is bad. He could install GNU tar on SCO just to be sure though--I think there might even be pre-compiled packages here: http://www.sco.com/skunkware/. -- -ckm

I would try to read the tape via "dd", e.g.: dd if=/dev/st0 of=/tmp/tape_dump ibs=20b -- Alexandr.Malusek@imv.liu.se
My LaserJet 5L is on its last legs, and I'd like to replace it with an Epson c80 or c82. There are no Linux drivers on the Epson site. Does anyone know if SuSE 8.0 has built in support for these printers? TIA! -- _________________________________________________________ Another Message From... L. I can highly recommend the Epson C80, as I us one as my main color printer for my SuSE 8.0 workstation. SuSE linux provides printer drivers natively via CUPS server and Gimp print drivers. The bw color and photo quality output from this printer is incredible. More importantly this is a very fast ink jet printer. It has separate color and bw reservoirs, so it is economical too. I suggest you read the info available on the following site: http://www.linuxprinting.org . To use the CUPS print server you must uninstall the lpring server and lpr dependant modules with the YaST software install/remove tool and also install the Cups server (not installed by default) and all cups related package including the very usefull GUI printer control program Kups for KDE. I suggest you use the C80 CUPS/GIMP print driver and not the cups/foomatic/gimprint driver. All of this comes with SuSE 8.0 The great thing is that the linux driver allows you to print at a greater resolution than the windokes. You can print at a max res of 2880x2880 with Linux/cups and only 2880X720 for windokes and Mac! Also Epson make a great scanner "perfection 1650" that works great with the SANE server that comes with SuSE 8.0 Regards Max On Tuesday 17 September 2002 03:41 am, L. Mark Stone wrote:

Max, Thanks for the prompt reply -- aand the wonderful news! I bought a C80 for my mother-in-law, and she loves it (unders Windows 2000), so I was keen to be able to use this if possible. Your advice about switching to CUPS is appreciated as well. Thanks again! Best regards, Mark On Tuesday, September 17, 2002 07:10 am, Max Webb wrote:

Max, I just thought you'd like to know that my new C80 is installed as per your exact suggestions, and it works great! Thanks again! Best regards, Mark On Tuesday, September 17, 2002 07:10 am, Max Webb wrote:

I am currently running an Epson C70 Printer with SuSE 8.0. It detects and automatically set up THAT printer just fine. Since there is an entry in the printer setup for the C80 as well, I cannot imagine any problems with that one either (unless someone knows differently :-) Should work Fine.
