[opensuse] libreoffice crash and failed recovery
Hi Everyone, Hope you all had a happy Easter. I recently found that desktop effects was making my system unstable. It would cause my whole system to freeze up and become completely unresponsive. It happened when I would hit left-alt-tab to switch between open applications. This didn't happen all the time, but it did begin to happen frequently. So I disabled desktop effects and have since not had a crash (except once when using virtual box, but that is another story). In any case, I had an open libreoffice document when the system froze up, and I had just saved it. I reset my computer, and when it rebooted I went to open up libreoffice again. It started the recovery process, which had always worked before without a problem, but this time it failed to recover the file. I did end up losing that file and had to rebuild it from scratch. In any case, I don't have a need to recover that old file anymore. However, I still am having a small problem with libreoffice. Whenever I open up any document in libreoffice, it still tries to recover that old document and fails. You can see the screen shots below. http://picpaste.com/konquerorimg1-fc9tA0RU.jpg http://picpaste.com/konquerorimg2-zL9iwXW4.jpg So I am wondering, how do I get libreoffice to stop attempting recovery of this file? I don't need it anymore and it is kind of a pain in the neck now. i had this problem once, before the advent of LibreOffice i think. the solution i found then was to start the executable with the --norestore option ("soffice --norestore"). then it doesn't try to fix that invisible document. can't remember if i had to continue doing this, or if doing it once solved the problem persistently; i think it did, though. there also must be a location, probably under ~/.liberoffice somewhere, where the app. stores info. about crashed files it thinks need recovery. couldn't find such a location right now, but that might be because i don't have any crashed doc.s at present. -- phani. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Ok, thanks for that info - that is a good start. I tried # loffice --norestore and it didn't try to recover the document, but it wasn't permanent. On clicking the icon, it still tries to recover the document. I also cannot find where it stores info about crashed files. I am not familiar with the way they have structured the program files, so I wouldn't know where to look. I examined everything under the .libreoffice directory and nothing indicates to me anything about crashed files. googling finds quite a few references to this problem, older as well as newer ones. the only ones i saw talking about an actual file to delete were re. openOffice though, and the file locations are different from LO. still, guessing at the dir. structures & file names, you might be able to figure out where this file is located today. there's also a libreOffice forums & mailing lists, where i've seen messages re. this -- but during the 5 min.s i tried, none gave an actual solution. perhaps you should join one of these and ask the people who know best? -- phani. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

i found identical or at least similar directory structures under ~/.config/libreoffice/. according to the timestamps, the one presently in use seems to be ~/.config/libreoffice/3-suse/ i still don't see anything that looks like it might keep track of crashed documents, but that's probably the place to look -- if it isn't in one or the other cache directories under /tmp, of course. -- phani. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Or.. did either of you try simply clicking Cancel instead of clicking Recover Document on this phantom unrecoverable document? Clicking Cancel should always work - I've rarely seen this fail to get OOo or LibO to stop trying to recover the missing/broken document. It's a common question I used to see all teh time when i was working for OpenOffice.org... and 99.99999%^ of the time clicking Cancel made it go away. i did when that happened to me. it worked, i.e., OO (at the time) proceeded to start & run, but the next time it was started, the same thing happened again. it's not a real deal breaker, but annoying. no idea if canceling the restore has a permanent effect now -- haven't crashed in LO recently. -- phani. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Ah, ok the .001 other time then. Next guess is that even though the actual file is missing, there is probably a hidden lockfile lurking that is causing the problem.. it's not being removed and the app is picking up on it. That's what I'd go hunting for next time it happens. :-) C. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

That is what did it! I hit cancel once and it is not trying to recover the file anymore. Thanks! George -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
