[opensuse] What happened to NVIDIA opensuse repositories?
Hi, Till now I used nvidia repositories, e.g. http://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/11.1/ to install nvidia closed source drivers. Yesterday I noticed that repositories are not accessible any more. Today's kernel upgrade obsoleted installed nvidia driver and there is no way to re-install it except using nvidia installer. I would prefer install from repository. Above link for some reason re-directs to http://http.download.nvidia.com/opensuse/11.1/ and returns "File not found". I could not see any announcement on nvidia site. Anybody sees this problem as well? Regards, -- Mark Goldstein -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Mark,
Try: ftp://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/11.1/
Thanks, ftp link works. Still looks like the repository is not updated (last update 13-Apr-2010, for previous version of kernel). Looks like I have no choice but to use binary installer. Hi Mark, According to the README at that site, NVIDIA only hosts the RPM-packages but it is up to Novell/SuSE to create new packages. It seems Novell is running a bit behind when it comes to creating new NVIDIA packages for openSUSE 11.3. Maybe they are busy:-) Anyway, using the NVIDIA installer is not a big deal. You only have to install some development packages and the kernel-sources and the NVIDIA installer will do the rest (as long as you are not running an active X-session). Just did it myself. Erwin, Thanks, I know. I did it also for 11.3. I preferred rpm, since then it was automatically - new kernel and new nvidia driver. Today I picked up the upgrade of 11.1 kernel and forgotten to check that there is corresponding nvidia driver, so stayed with run-level 3. But as you said, not big deal. I've already re-built it. The 11.2 and 11.1 repositories are the same; the last update was in fact on 4/13. IIRC (at least in 11.2) in Yast/Software Management doing a kernel upgrade will invoke reinstallation of the nvidia rpm. The driver rpm's are not tied to a particular kernel version (except for the "kernel-desktop" vs "kernel-default" distinction, and the "gfx" vs "gfx01" vs "gfx02" flavors which correspond to nvidia card versions). Just use YaST or zypper to reinstall the latest rpm. The 11.3 repositories has not been set up just yet, that always lags release data by a short while. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

As far as I could see, driver has kernel-specific parts, e.g. the last one for 11.1 was nvidia-gfxG02-kmp-default-195.36.15_2.6.27.45_0.2-11.2.i586.rpm nvidia-gfxG02-kmp-pae-195.36.15_2.6.27.45_0.2-11.2.i586.rpm ... definitely for the kernel 2.6.27.45_0.2 Regards, -- Mark Goldstein -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Greetings. Is that the same about the ATI fglrx drivers? As you can't get in the repos I guess that currently there's not 2.6.34 kernel support (or openSUSE 11.3 support) from AMD people. I would check this on the forums, because the situation has been changing and I don't think the documentation has all been updated for 11.3. fwiw, these links may help (but again, need to be updated for 11.3): http://wiki.opensuse.org/SDB:Configuring_graphics_cards http://wiki.opensuse.org/SDB:ATI_drivers -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

If they really needed to be updated - I think it would be apropriate to leave a message on the wiki articles' discussion pages and a maintenance tag (see: http://en.opensuse.org/Help:Tag) on the article page or edit the articles (if you know in what way they should be). But I would think the problem were now no so much the articles:
Warning: The easy way currently doesn't work, because the ATi repository is broken. Until ATi fix their repo, either install the proprietary driver the hard way, or stick to using the free radeonhd/radeon drivers

Regards,
My bad, a typo caused inaccurate comparison of 11.1 and 11.2 repos. There is more to this than meets the eye. In 11.2 the 196.36.15 driver rpm suffix is 2.6.31.5_0.1-11.1. However, the current 11.2 kernel is 2.6.31.12-0.2. On my system with this kernel, under the 2.6.31.12-0.2 modules tree there is a directory named "weak-updates" in which the driver file resides (and is what is seen by modinfo); but that file is actually just a symlink to the actual driver file which is under the 2.6.31.5-0.1 tree - and that kernel is 3 versions old. So apparently *some* kernel updates require a driver reinstallation but others instead create a link to the already installed driver. I looked in the driver and kernel packages, but could not find where/how this is determined. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Hi. Not sure if this is what you want. It doesn't contain the latest drivers though. ftp://download.nvidia.com/opensuse/11.3/i586/ I'd recommend the 256.65 driver from the Nvidia site. It's really easy to install although I think you need to install it after each kernel update.
