[opensuse] tar 1.22 packages for 11.0 (provides xz compression support)
openSuSE hasn't updated many of the core packages for 11.0 since the original release. One side effect is that packages get stale and do not have basic capabilities of the current packages. One package like this is tar. Tar 1.19 is three minor versions out of date and cannot handle the '-J' option that was patched for 1.20, native in 1.21 (filtered to lzma compression) and to its final form in 1.22 where '-J' now provides Xz filtering. To get around this, I have been building tar on all 11.0 installs for quite a while. Finally, I got tired of reinventing the wheel with each install so I decided to build it on buildservice, so I have built packages for 11.0 to make the install easier. If you use 11.0 and would like to update you tar packages, then you can get the rpms from build service at: http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/drankinatty/openSUSE_11.0/ You will need 2 packages: tar tar-lang Don't forget to install xz as well. Let me know if you run into any issues with the packages. Thanks. (note: 11.1 packages are also available) -- David C. Rankin, J.D.,P.E.
