Okay Eirk, I have solved the problem. I DID NOT use Volker's script again. I found 2 start and kill scripts in /etc/init.d/rc5.d for vmware. One was apparently from the initial install of vmware express. I got rid of that, as well as got rid of all the networking hoopla, just using bridged (but host-only shows up too), and now only get one instance of the modules being loaded, and upon reboot, no issues that I can see. I remember from another mailing list, that VMware 3.0 should not require Volker's scripts, as long as still do the header file part. Regards, Keith B. BTW, vmware is running in the background as I write this.
Erik,
It failed! :^(. But, I think my problem is that the vmware modules get loaded twice on bootup. No problems with the first loading, but then fails on the second load with this message: insmod: a module named vm* already exists (for each module) VMware[init]: vmnet*: No such device (for each vmnet, 8 & 1 in my case) modprobe: modprobe: Can't locate module vmnet* (for each vmnet)
Any ideas where to look and how to get rid of the second loading?
Regards,
Keith B.

Hi,
It removes the files completely. /usr/lib/modules/vmware/source is empty, as well as /usr/lib/vmware/modules/vmware-ws-1142-for-2.4.7a. Then I installed the rpm using -ivh and it put the files back in /usr/lib/vmware/source.
I'll reboot now to see what happens and get back to you.

Erik,
Hi.
I have SuSE 7.3 and had VMware Express and used Volker's HowTO. I upgraded to Workstation 3.0 and used Volker's HowTO. It worked well unitl I had to reboot and then it would not work not matter what. I deleted and reinstalled Wkstn 3.0 this time and DID NOT use Volker's HowTO. It is running fine, but I have not shutdown and rebooted yet. I guess you could go either way.
As you have used Volker's HowTo, the missing files and symbolic links are back even if you deleted and reinstalled.
Please try a reboot or a shutdown :-)
Would be interesting to know the result, and you do it for us :-)

Thank you for your mail. Good you solved the problem there. You do NOT use those two scripts anymore ??. What does that mean "as long as still do the header file part" ?. Do you then install per what is written in the 3.0 manual ??.

Nice end of it Keith, Congrats.
