And not to beat the topic to death, but Thunderbird does by retrieving headers only if you opt to; Evolution doesn't appear to have an option. I suspect a fair number of readers using POP would tend to use Thunderbird, though, but that's just a WAG on my part. And this is possible on a list by list basis, or is it necessary to select headers-only for all mail (simply because one or a few lists can't be like most others in preventing excessively large messages)? What about rereads? I download mail when the time is appropriate, and expect messages to pop instantly (0 latency) whether the network is up and/or properly responding, or not. FWIW, TB is was originally derived from the old Mozilla Suite (the Netscape replacement), which later became SeaMonkey. There is very little difference in the code base between TB and SM-Mail, most of which is in appearance, not function. I get 300-1000 individual emails per day. Those with attachments and fancy formatting are always unwanted. I use filters to direct some of the garbage directly to the trash, but there are simply too many filters involved when subscribing to many lists to have each and every one handled ideally. The way this list is run is definitely not one of the positives about running openSUSE. Most lists munge, but this does not. Most lists do not permit attachments, but this does. The average tone from regulars here is the worst of any list I'm on that has moderate to high volume. -- "He who works his land will have abundant food, but the one who chases fantasies will have his fill of poverty." As I don't use Thunderbird regularly, I don't know all the features. Arguably there are ways to work around these issues for anyone who is willing to look at their own workflow as opposed to try to impose a rather draconian change to the workflow of 500+ other people when things are working fine.
What about rereads?
I suspect not an issue. If you decide to download a message, it's stored locally.

Then you have to look at your options for how you manage your access to mail lists. I don't mean to be blunt, but it seems that you're in a rather small minority of users here in this being any sort of a problem. If attachments are that much of a problem for you, then use a newsreader that caches. Have leafnode download from news.gmane.org for you. gmane seems to strip the attachments, so presto - you have no attachments to deal with.

There again, that's not really the list's problem.

There are other community avenues as well, so if you don't like mailing lists, there are options for newsgroups, web-based forums, etc.
Most lists munge, but this does not.

You're entitled to your opinion. Not everyone's going to be pleased by the decisions the list maintainers make. Such is life. That doesn't mean that it's not valid to raise concerns, but issues such as the first one you raise in the above quoted section have been beaten to death over and over again. There comes a point where those who have a problem with the way the list is being run have to decide whether or not they receive sufficient value to continue as subscribers and then decide if alternative access methods (such as gmane) might provide a better option. I couldn't keep up with this mail list if I used an e-mail program; that's why I use gmane myself. Guess what? It doesn't have "problems" because of the munge/no-munge decision or the decision of attachments. It's lean, fast, and complete. Messages are *generally* threaded well (though not always due to some braindead mail programs out there), and I can selectively watch threads based on my interest.
