Have you tried running YAST2 ---> Online Updates ?? The tray updater was broken out of the box. It takes some fiddling to get everything up to date. Reinstalling will not help. I would also imagine that SuSE/Novell would now have some information for this on their website. But I could be wrong.

thanks Like Bruce said, you have to use YOU. Just install everything it suggests (libzypp comes to mind). I had to do this 3 times, each time restarting YOU before I got everyting. I'm running 10.1 64-bit and thanks to your advice is now also working for me (I think - see below). Mohammed - you need to first register with Novell for the patch update mirror locations. Do that in Yast in Online Update Configuration. I had actually registered with Novell successfully for updates when I first installed (clean) but it took three attempts. I must say I figured that was all I had to do. After this discussion started I looked and noticed the tray icon for the first time and clicked it. It failed to complete with a libzypp dependency issue. I went to YOU and saw most of the updates were deselected except libzypp so I accepted that. YOU installed the libzypp patch and restarted with all or most of the patches ticked for download. I closed YOU and tried the tray icon again. I got a different dependency failure message (can't remember) and went back to YOU to find the patches unticked except for (I think) another libzypp patch. I went through the same process again and now the saffron coloured tray icon thingy is downloading patches. <below> It is saying it is updating software but the progress bar does not seem to be moving. The ADSL router is working very hard so I suppose I just need to be patient. There were a lot of patches. I have
to mention though, I have now switched to smart. After some initial pains getting it going, I must say, I am very impressed.

Well, mostly because it just works:) I must say, I was very sceptical of a 3rd party tool that is currently standing at version 0.42, which lead to me being pleasantly suprised. I started smart, it suggested some channels, which just so happens to be all the ones I wanted. I clicked refresh all channels, and it gave me a list of updates available. I said install all, and was impressed to see that it can download from all sites in parallel. There is definately some minor glitches still, but all in all, I think it was worth the time invested in it. Some glitches: - The tray icon always asks for the root password when you log in. - The tray icon does not give a clear indication of status. You have to hover the mouse over it to get a tool tip of the status. - Right click on the tray icon , and selecting "Start Smart .." does nothing. - Only a subset of functions are implemented in the gui. This got me at first. Once you're running, the gui is all you need. Marius

This was suggested in the smart list forum and while I initially thought that what was being proposed sounded "risky" I now concur with the idea and have, in fact, implemented this on my system. To make smart act like the old YOU did do this: in /etc/permissions.local add the entry- /usr/bin/smart-update root.root 4755 and then execute SuSEconfig --module permissions Cheers. -- This computer is environment-friendly and is running on OpenSuSE 10.1

Thanks. This is a winner tip :)
Hi Everyone It seems that software updtes are the thing of today. I set up a 10.1 box (32 bit) and the little update icon in the tray seems to working fine - except - when I select updates to install, it comes back with the following error: "Media Change is Required Please insert 'SUSE-Linux-10.1-CD-download-x86' on media 2" The CD's are disabled, and 3 ftp sites has been added in the "Installation source" program. It seems to work fine, as it shows all the updates that are available - i just can not install it. Am I ovrelooking something or is there perhaps something I did incorrectly? Regards Kobus

Hello: I have changed to smart too. You can download a smart version preconfigured for suse 10.1 from here: ftp://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/misc/suser-guru/smart//SUSE-10.1/ It already has the channels (sites for package repositories) and mirrors for all the important suse package sites configured (including KDE updates, packman packages and suse updates). You may need a little time to get used to it but it is much faster than YOU (at least than YOU in suse 10.0) since it transfers the files parallelly from different sources. When you run it first it automatically updates the channels getting the info of the newest packages. Though you have to set/activate which channels you want to use. You can set them in Edit/Channels. I downloaded it (i586 version) and ran it. When I did, I got the message, "smart not included on the medium." What gives? This is getting more and more bizzare. I am seriously considering going back to good old 10.0, and doing my updates manually. :| I then tried to run it again, and my machine simply rebooted after I clicked on it. Look, go to this URL: http://labix.org/smart and download the 5 packages for SuSE and for your CPU (you don't need the one with 'debug' in its name). UNISTALL the smart package which comes with SuSE itself and then install the 5 rpms. Firstly, do this rpm -ivh *.rpm --test and then if there are no errors (there shouldn't be) drop the "--test" from the line. One of the packages installed contains pre-configured channels (sources) to update SuSE 10.1 *but* you need to actually activate some of them (Edit/Channels and select them). I'll give it a shot and let you know. Well, unfortunately, that didn't work. I feel like I'm being subjected to purgatory for using Windows all these years. If it isn't DLL-hell, I'm now in dependency hell. Doing the test told me I needed python (which I already supposedly have), python elemental, and a bazillion other things. Trying to load python elemental (which I found on pbone.net) I got chastized for not having a bunch of other things. (I could swear I saw ctrl3d.dll in the list.) I guess I'll just give up now. I apparently just can't get apt running. I think I might just do a fresh install (this was an upgrade) and see how that goes. I suppose I could do no worse. :P It WAS my own dumb fault for trying to upgrade instead of fresh install. I really only wanted the enhanced WiFi capibility. (Of course, it still doesn't work the way I want it to, but that's another story.) Thanks! -- K

Oh dear, mea culpa :-( . I forgot to mention that you need to install python-elementtree before installing smart packages. Python-elementtree is available as a SuSE install- you don't have to go anywhere to get it. Do: "Start"/System/Yast Control Centre/Software/Software Management and search for python-elementtree and then install it. This will fix your problem and you can now install the smart packages. Main thing, is don't give up. It all DOES work. Cheers. -- This computer is environment-friendly and is running on OpenSuSE 10.1

Smart is not the same thing as apt. Apt has FAR fewer dependencies, especially since it doesn't come with a gui.

In Yast > Software > Online Update Configuration you have to register for an online-update source, or add it manually. Only then Yast > Online Update can see any patches from that source and install them. After you have used YOU once the little thingy in the system-tray will start working ok. Sven
