What's your setup, RAID? 32 bit? 64 bit? Any error messages? Details are always helpful ;) Later, Robert -- Robert Schweikert MAY THE SOURCE BE WITH YOU SUSE-IBM Software Integration Center LINUX Tech Lead rschweikert@novell.com rschweikert@ca.ibm.com 781-464-8147 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Its a laptop. Only one disk. 32 bit. If there are any error messages before the grub prompt they went by too fast. I've used a live CD. The /boot/grub/menu.lst is empty and there are no kernel files or maps or any such in /boot Surely a rescue would be much the same 32/64? -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Since there is no "rescue" on the current versions you will need to go through the install process again, but instead of installing new choose upgrade and follow the prompts. Hopefully this time it will install the boot loader properly for you. -- Ken Schneider SuSe since Version 5.2, June 1998 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Well, actually there is a 'rescue' on the DVD, but not a 'repair' as there was on the 11.3 DVD. This 'rescue' gives you a root shell on a cut-down system. I did not install. I already had a 11.3 system and was upgrading, as I said in my origial message. I *DID* use the 'upgrade' rather than the install, I did follow the prompts and perhaps it did install a boot LOADER, sicne I get into grub, bit it *removed* all the exisiting kernels and did not install any new ones. /boot is stripped right down. No initrds, no maps, no linuz, no linux. grub/menu.lst, is, as I said, EMPTY. It is HOSED. It was hosed becuase I did the ~upgrade~. You can run a live image, setup a the network on your laptop. Mount your partitions accordingly (sorry can't provide details without knowing your position layout), don't forget to bind mount /dev. Then chroot to your mount point. You can then configure the repos with "zypper ar". Then you can run "zypper dup" it should sort things out for you. Pretty much that. :-) :-( Its useful to have another machine (or two) around so as to read mail and browse the net to find the details ... Some progress. Using the 'rescue' shell, I copies in a basic kernel, enough to boot. Stuff was all there, enough to bring up networking and run zypper on a repository I entered after looking it up with a browser on a borrowed windows machine. Then installed kernel; -pae and -desktop The machine now boots but X won't come up. before you tell me to look for errors in in /var/log/Xorg.0.log THERE AREN'T ANY All I can find is a line at the end of /bar/log/kdm.log that reads No protocol specified kdmgreet: cannot connect to xserver 0: startx (as root) produces prodigous amounts of error messages that seem to have little to do with X and lots to do with everything else like MySQL and akonadai and ending in a segfault -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

All empty? Wow. :-( I think I heard of this problem before. If you have space for another install, a small fresh install on another partition, do it and then copy the files, adjusting the menu.lst for the different partition. Even on a different computer will do, if it is the same arch and version (in that case, nomodeset or no can be different). - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. It's not new, though maybe his details differ. On a multiboot system you can chroot in, then zypper in a kernel, which I just had to do - again (in Factory). https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=674838 -- "The wise are known for their understanding, and pleasant words are persuasive."
