[SuSE Linux] S.u.S.E. FAQ - first draft
Hi, this is the first preview of the FAQ, consider it a pre-Alpha version :) Many thanks to Michael Lankton, who kindly donated some entries to the FAQ. Note: This FAQ will not contain answers to installation problems! I see no reason to double the effort of our Support Database, which is available via the WWW. It's focus will be on general questions about the distribution and the company (and people?) behind it. I welcome your comments and contributions! If you would like to send something to me, that you consider being worth to put in this FAQ, please put the Word [FAQ] in the subject of your message and try to stick to the layout of the current Q+A's. That makes life a little easier for me :) This version is ASCII-only. As soon as I have some more material, I will probably switch to SGML and set up a homepage for it. OK, here we go: <----8<----8<----8<---- SNIP ----8<-----8<-----8<-----> The S.u.S.E. Linux FAQ (english version) ---------------------------------------- Date: 14/08/1998 Abstract -------- This document is a collection of frequently asked questions and answers from the mailing list suse-linux-e@suse.com, which is a forum for users of the S.u.S.E. Linux distribution. It is currently maintained by Lenz Grimmer <grimmer@suse.de>. If you would like to add an entry to this list, feel free to so! Please use the Phrase "[FAQ]" in the subject of your message. In addition to this FAQ, you will find plenty of information about S.u.S.E. Linux (and linux in general) in the support database (SDB), which S.u.S.E. provides as a free service to the Internet community: <A HREF="http://www.suse.de/Support/sdb_e/</A">http://www.suse.de/Support/sdb_e/</A> The support database articles can also be found on the S.u.S.E. Linux CD, in the version available at production time. They are located in series "doc", package "sdb". The articles can be read with any html browser. 1. Questions about the Company ------------------------------ ? What does S.u.S.E. stand for? ! Gesellschaft für Software- und Systementwicklung mbH, which can be roughly translated as "Company for development of software and systems" ? Where does S.u.S.E. come from? ! Our sales and marketing division is located in Fürth, which is a town next to Nuremberg, Germany. The develoment and support department is currently located in Nuremberg. It is planned however, to join these departments in a new location in the center of Nuremberg. We also have an american division (S.u.S.E., Inc.), located in Oakland, CA, which is responsible for the non-European market. 2. Questions about the Distribution ----------------------------------- ? Is S.u.S.E. Linux libc5 or glibc2 based? ! S.u.S.E. Linux <= 5.3 is a libc5 based distribution. S.u.S.E. Linux 5.3 added support for glibc2 binaries, and beginning with S.u.S.E. Linux 6.0, expected at the end of 1998, S.u.S.E. is making the move to glibc2. ? Is there an Alpha-specific version of the S.u.S.E. Linux distribution? ! Porting to the Alpha platform is done in parallel with the development of the 6.0 release. It is expected, that the Alpha port will be available quite shortly after the release of i386 6.0. ? What about other platforms, e.g. Sparc? ! As soon as the port to glibc2 has been finished, porting to other platforms will be much easier. There are no plans yet, if there will be ports to others than the Alpha. ? Why does S.u.S.E. ship with such an old gcc? ! gcc-2.7.2.1 is known to properly compile 2.0.x kernels. In fact, even Linus Torvalds is still using this version. When S.u.S.E. switches to glibc2 with S.u.S.E. Linux 6.0, it is expected that egcs will be the default C compiler included with S.u.S.E. Linux, although gcc-2.7.2.x may be included for kernel compilation. This depends on egcs, which is in active development, and may or may not be suitable for compiling 2.0.x kernels at the time of S.u.S.E. Linux 6.0 release. ? Can I use S.u.S.E. Linux as a DHCP or bootp client? ! Not yet, this feature is scheduled for the upcoming 6.0 release. It is possible to manually modify the init-scripts, however this is not a trivial task. 3. May-be this is obvious for you, but you should consider to add some very basic information, such as * a link to http://www.suse.[com|de] * a link to ftp://ftp.suse.[com|de] (Where to get updates/fixes) * a list of ftp-sites which mirror ftp.suse.com (to reduce the load on your overloaded site) Ralf. - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

OK, here are a couple of more points.

The S.u.S.E. Linux FAQ (english version) ---------------------------------------- Date: 15/08/1998 2. Questions about the Distribution ----------------------------------- ? My libc5 version works fine. What will I gain, aside from newer versions of some programs, from going to Version 6.0 with glibc? ! <this one's for you, not me :-) But I think it'll be asked a lot.> ? I now have an earlier S.u.S.E. distribution installed that is based on libc5. I'd like to upgrade to Ver 6.0 from the CD. Please give me some guidance on the pitfals...can I just update, or will I have to delete the earlier distribution and start over? ! <this one's also for you>
