hi, all: i battled kernel 2.4.4 all day. i think i will declare defeat. First, i upgraded kernel from 2.4.0 to 2.4.2 using rpm from suse's website. i did lilo after rpm is done. i reboot. i got this famous 'vfs, cannot mount root fs' msg. i actually saw an article on suse's kb about the msg. but it did not help. then i downloaded the src of 2.4.4. followed instructions, everything went fine. it compiled. so copy bzImage and system.map to /boot. reboot. same error. i tried some different options in menuconfig. no. same error msg. i am using suse on a gateway 7210 server, with 1 gb of ram and 2 scsi drives on aic7xxx host adapter. ext2fs support is built in the kernel. i tried building aic7xxxx in the kernel and as a module. nothing helped. anybody else has done this before? i cannot be the only one. i searched on the net about this error. looks like a lot of people have the same problem. but, i did not see any clear solutions. thanks john wang.(beat up by kernel 2.4.4) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Did you run mk_initrd after compile/rpm installation? This is particularly important because of your scsi adaptor. Hope it helps, Alvaro Novo SuSE 7.1 -=- Kernel 2.4.2-4GB -=- KDE 2.1.1 10:48pm up 7 days, 3:38, 1 user, load average: 0.02, 0.03, 0.06
Hello, I'am using kernel 2.4.4 from www.kernel.org and with dual CPU 512MB RAM and with Aic7XXX SCSI card. I build the kernel with the SCSI support and it is working fine. Here are my config options: <*> SCSI support <*>SCSI disk support <*>SCSI CD-ROM support -- SCSI low-level drivers <*>Adaptec AIC7xx support (253) Maximum number of TCO commands per device (5000) Initial bus reset delay in milli-seconds Actually I am not using SuSE on this computer, I thing this wouldn't be of any effect to the kernel stuff. I hope this will help. Erdal MUTLU ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Iyi gunler!
