[opensuse] kde and opensuse 11
hello from a newbie, i recently tried v11 and was so frustrated with the kde4 interface that i got a copy of v10.3. i read where someone on the list had the choice of the kde3 or kde4 desktop. my copy of v11 didn't give me that option. i have used 10.3 before, but only for a short time, so i'm still a newbie at linux. what frustrated me about kde4 was that i couldn't get into root to change my desktop setup. i knew that v10.3 had an admin button to allow such activity, that's why i went back. i'm far from being a programmer and my knowledge base for doing things from the command line is extremely limited. v10.3 came with firefox 2.0.0.16 and ooo 2.3.?. what i did was uninstall the two programs and reinstalled them after setting up my reposotories. now i have firefox 3.0.1 and ooo 2.4.1. i find that v11 kde4 is not very user friendly if you are new to linux, that's why i went back to v10.3 because of some prior experience and for the minimal level of customization i needed tp perform. i would like to make the return to v11 for some updated programs that are not available in v10.3. so here's the question. based upon my experience of deleting firefox and ooo and reinstalling them and getting the most recent version, can i uninstall kde4 and install kde3 and be able to run the kde3 desktop with no side effects in v11? cheers, dwain -- "Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." I agree about KDE 4. However, I don't understand why you couldn't install KDE 3. I've done it on 4 different computers. -- Use OpenOffice.org <http://www.openoffice.org> -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I also much prefer pre-KDE4, but I also cannot understand it as the install has asked me each time I installed what desktop I wanted, I think before or just after specifying my tiimezone. There are several install options for 11.0. You can download the DVD or you can download the LiveCD images. The "official" LiveCDs are KDE4 and Gnome. However, a nice guy made us a KDE3 LiveCD, which you can download from here: http://cgoncalves.blogspot.com/2008/08/opensuse-110-kde3-live-cds.html

No exactly sure what you mean here. YaST is the admin tool in openSUSE, and you should have been able to get to it easily from the menus.

There's been a bug push for KDE4, and while not as feature complete as KDE3, a lot of people seem to like it. Further, they have stopped work on KDE3 other than bug fixes, so KDE4 IS the future.

Unfortunately, it's not easy to uninstall KDE4. You have to do it manually. There is supposedly a fix being prepared for 11.1. I was able to remove it manually, but I think I may have broken a few things. Further, I have seen people talk about how KDE4 is supposed to be faster(which I have not found to be the case) and that it uses less resources. The issue I have with that is that the stock KDE3 install includes KDE4 packages, when there are already KDE3 packages. When you run a KDE4 app, you load the qt4 libraries, which uses more resources. So, unfortunately, it's not easy to really compare them under openSUSE for that reason. KDE4 shows a lot of promise, but it has a long way to go. I recommend you download the DVD so that you can select the software you want to be installed. The LiveCDs only install what's on them with no option to change what is installed until after it's done. 11.0 is a huge improvement over 10.3 in many areas, but the KDE4 is unfortunately not one of them. Good luck. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

My new favorite way is from USB stick/drive. It's nicely documented on the Wiki here: http://en.opensuse.org/SuSE_install_from_USB_drive I travel with that bootable USB installer now :-) It has come in handy quite a few times. Oh, of all the good, wise and well reasoned warnings and cautions Novell ignored concerning the plan to release KDE4 as the first choice of desktops for 11.0.... Dwain, You can select KDE3.5 for the desktop in 11.0 (much recommended). When you get to the desktop selection, look--harder, it's there. -- David C. Rankin, J.D., P.E.
