Can anyone recommend a good motherboard for SuSE 7? I do not have any version of Linux running now and I am building a system from scratch. I am pretty sure that I want a Socket A motherboard and am leaning towards a Tyan S2390 with a Duron, but have seen on the list that shared PCI/ISO slots don't work. It has one and if it is not supported it seems like a waste.
I have a Tyan S1590 with a shared PCI/ISA slot. It has no problems with that slot or any others. Just make sure that PnP OS in the bios is set to "no". I have had nothing but good experiences with Tyan and Asus motherboards running pentiums or better.
Also, if building a system from scratch, will I need to have DOS and/or windows installed for any part of the Linux installation?
No, the only reason would be to dual boot. In that case install linux last or have the linux install or rescue floppys handy as you will probably have to reinstall lilo. Good luck, Tim

No. My current installation is on a nice 20GB harddrive, which has never seen a bit of any microsoft program. When I installed, I booted from SuSE6.3 CD#1, partitioned my drive, let it do it's install, and it worked. After that I downloaded ALL the SuSE7.0 packages from the net, and made a clean install from them, using the default floppy boot image. I now run 7.0 with Helix Gnome, and I like it. Regards Ole
