Need a little advice after upgrading to KDE 3.2.3

Hello; I'm new to SuSE (V9.0) having come over from ten years on OS/2. I recently upgraded my KDE to 3.2.3 and while nearly everything worked out I do have a problem. With the upgrade Konqueror no longer opens downloaded RPMs into the install RPMs window ( lacking a better description) where I could install the new file via YAST2. New behavior has the file opened in Kpackage but Kpackage simply hangs and I must kill it to clear it off my desktop. How can I return Konqueror to its previous behavior? Thanks for any help. Tim

This was going to be my fall-back plan. I was quite handy with CLI on OS/2 but with this new system I've got relearn nearly everything. Thus the attraction to 'point 'n shoot' methods. Tim

You're wierd Tim, you know that??? ;-) Everyone was howling mad about Kong launching the install RPM window rather than offering to save. It was unsafe, annoying, and way to much like' a certain other insecure OS you may have heard of. Everyone was asking in these lists how to suppress this behaviour, so you could get rpms and just store them on disk. It was almost impossible when the site hid the rpm behind a php script like Packman. Everyone was recommending use of Mozilla for downloads. So they made it not the default, and then along comes Tim... Ok, nuf of the ribbing... If you really want to do that you can select open with Kpackage, and there is a LONG hang, - looks like its never comeing back, but in my tests, it does, you just have to wait it out till it downloads the whole thing. -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

No problems with the ribbing. I never needed to worry about such matters on OS/2 so I guess I'm a little incautious. Being quite new to Linux and not really blessed with an abundance of time lately to futz around I've going for the expedient ways of doing things. I really don't want a situation where I have to reinstall the system to get back where I was before. That said, I also wanted to explore a bit and upgrade to KDE 3.2.3. As I mentioned everything seemed to go off smoothly, only the change in this behavior had me scratching my head. Thanks, Tim

This behaviour is part of the kdebase3-SuSE package. Probably this in't upgraded or installed. With suse 9.0 there were quite some problems with this because this package was incompatible with kde 3.2. Maybe the same has happened again? BTW this also includes susewatcher and suseplugger and some eyecandy. If this package is not installed anymore try to install it again. Peter Vollebregt

Verifying what Peter says. This isn't an issue with KDE 3.2.2. Thanks for the heads up with KDE 3.2.3 though. At least we know the fix. Copy that SUSE 9.1 KDEbase3-Suse rpm to your home directory. Uninstall/Reinstall it (as root) after every change with apt or yast or Red Carpet. Let apt or yast remove it when necessary which will be almost every time you futz with your software packages by adding/removing/updating them. Stan

Stan, As far as i know after the forced reinstall of kdebase3-SuSE i normally reinstall kdebase3 again to replace the parts that should be 'newer'. Works for me without problems with version 9.0. But it would be very nice if suse would deliver this package with an upgrades kde because it is not so funny to keep up with kde like this. I like suse a lot but never had these problems with 8.1 and 8.2. Peter

Check your File Associations for KDE/Konqueror. Under the embedding tab make sure that 'Show file in embedded viewer' is checked and that 'KRPMview' is the Service. Stan

Well, thats it. KRPMview is not available. On the DVD its available as part of the KDEbase3-Suse package which, of course, was removed as a conflict when upgrading KDE. Looking at reinstalling that but I'm unsure about doing so without generating 3 other dependency conflicts. According to YAST mind you. Can I copy the file to the drive and install it manually? Telling RPM to ignore the conflicts? Or will that Idea bung up the works? The conflicts are: kdeaddons3-kate 3.1.4-35 conflict Conflict Resolution: ( ) Ignore Conflict and Risk System Inconsistencies kdeaddons3-konqueror 3.1.4-35 conflict Conflict Resolution: ( ) Ignore Conflict and Risk System Inconsistencies kdebase3 3.1.4-36 conflict Conflict Resolution: ( ) Ignore Conflict and Risk System Inconsistencies #### YaST2 conflicts list END ### Thanks for the advice Tim

Why not try doing it by hand open an terminal in whatever flavour you like /prefere cd to the Dir that holds your file (you did save it to some named Dir did you not ie like "/home/downloads/Jul04" or whatever you like then you dont have to go downloading it again should things go T**S up for some reason , Then you can rpm -ivh to install the program or rpm -vUh to UP grade an already installed program ..
