[opensuse] 32 bit Seamonkey & Firefox on 64 bit 10.3
Since the 64 bit browsers can't use the 32 bit Java plugin, I decided to install the 32 bit versions of Seamonkey and Firefox. However, even though I downloaded the i586 packages, when I installed them, the 64 bit versions were apparently downloaded and installed. Is there any way to force installation of 32 bit packages? Do I have to use the packages from Mozilla, rather than from openSUSE? tnx jk -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

No, that worked for me. I did it using YaST choosing the 32bit version in the Versions tab and chose to reinstall the package then. That replaced the 64bit version with the 32bit one. Don't forget to do that with your Java distribution as well. Wolfgang -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

If you wanted to stick with a 64 bit browser I did find a place to still download Blackdown java, which has a working 64 bit java plugin. The only problem is it is 1.4.2. It does work though. Check out ftp://mirrors.ibiblio.org/pub/mirrors/blackdown/JDK-1.4.2/amd64/03 I installed the jdk, just so you know. -- Joe Morris Registered Linux user 231871 running openSUSE 10.3 x86_64 -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I'll have to look into that. I'm surprised that Sun hasn't come up with a 64 bit plugin, as so many computers are 64 bit these days. tnx -- Use OpenOffice.org http://www.openoffice.org -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

In YaST Software Management you can specify which version to install. Look in tab Versions (right bottom panel), and click on version that you want to install. -- Regards, Rajko. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

I'll have to give that a try. tnx -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

This isn't quite true. 64bit konqueror can use 64bit java. Also I hear there's a java plugin for 64bit mozilla in icetea.

You should be able to select the 32bit version in the (Qt/ncurses, not gtk) yast -> software management, under the versions tab. There is an intermittent bug with selecting the appropriate version though. Which several people have reported with symptoms such as yours of downlodaing the wrong architecture. When you select the version make sure the package is also set to "update" state. In worst case, remove firefox completely & reinstall selecting the 32bit version. _ Benjamin Weber -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

This isn't quite true. 64bit Konqueror uses Java in a completely different way and James is right saying that 64bit browsers can't use the 32bit Java _plugin_ ;-) Just nitpicking.
