Two things: - - Do you really need to recompile everything? The VMWare provided by SuSE is precompiled correctly. - - The message above is asking for the C headers. The ones provided by libc library are in package glibc-devel (installed in /usr/include) and the ones provided by the kernel are in package kernel-source (installed in /usr/src/linux/include). If you want the kernel libraries, you may need to run the command "make dep" in /usr/src/linux before using them. - -- Thibaut Cousin E-mail : cousin@in2p3.fr Web : http://clrwww.in2p3.fr -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.0.7 (GNU/Linux) iD8DBQE90lw7v1vqsTa1E4oRAtyaAJ9HvvdvaLQFq9royakNFJbc8Us9eACfWJAh CsuzE9JoCusjnjWpGMcO/7Q= =1x7P -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

I have just unistalled the VMware 3.2, and have installed the VMware that follows SuSE. Yes, the kernel modules need to be built. Unless vmware comes with prebuilt kernel modules that fit into the suse kernel they need to be recompiled Anders

Well, it looks like the vmware script is broken, but it also looks like this isn't a problem, since the compile continues.

Hi Herman. Its an acpi fault. You can find it on the SDB. You have to add acpi to your /boot/grub/menu.lst after the vga=791. Then after a reboot its should be ok. Info on lilo is also to be found there. HTH

Well yes, but it cannot see the cd-rom drive: CD-ROM: '/dev/cdrom' exists, but does not appear to be a CD-ROM device. Error connecting the CD-ROM device.

And does /dev/cdrom point to a valid cd device? I should point out that I haven't tried vmware 3.2, but I have run 3.1.1 successfully on SuSE 8.1. If there really is functionality broken or missing in 3.2 you should report it to vmware. For the price they're charging they should provide good support. Anders

I don't have the answer to your problem, but I just want to mention that I have VMware Workstation 3.2 running on SuSE 8.1 without any problems. I have an AMD processor, so my kernel is k_athlon (2.4.19-66) I got the message about the prebuilt modules not working, and the need to compile. i basically accepted the defaults (except I didn't ant to access the host filesystem) and it compiled the modules. I got a lot of warnings, especially the -malign-jumps is obsolete message. vmware-config.pl ran fine. initially on starting vmware it segfaulted, but adding "apic" to grub fixed that. Now it works fine. My cdrom is /media/cdrom in linux and /dev/cdrom in VMware. in any event, it is possible to run VMware Workstation 3.2 on SuSE 8.1. My guest operating system is Windows NT, but I don't think that matters. Mike -- Michael A. Those are two different things. /dev/cdrom is (or should be) a symlink to the device to which your cdrom is attached. /media/cdrom is a directory where your cdrom gets mounted. Can you mount your cdrom so you see the contents in /media/cdrom? If you can, what do you get when you do grep media/cdrom /etc/fstab Anders

Ok.

Yes but if I will do it, I have to mount /media/cdrecorder. Should have been /media/cdrecorder. When I use Xcdroast the 2 drives is working ok. Source media in /media/cdrom and target in /media/cdrecorder
If you can, what do you get when you do

kernel (hd0,2)/boot/vmlinuz root=/dev/hda3 hdd=ide-scsi vga=791 apic.
Not in 8.1. In 8.1 the regular ide-cd driver is compiled as a module. This means that whichever driver gets loaded first will claim all drives as its own unless you explicitly tell it otherwise. Since you load the ide-scsi driver above, both your drives will be scsi. In previous versions, the ide-cd module was compiled into the kernel, so drives were "by default" ide-cd, but this behaviour changed in 8.1. Don't ask me why :) You can verify this by doing "cdrecord -scanbus". If you can see both your drives there they are both ide-scsi Anders

Yes it is (in order to configure the daemons). You have played with your kernel? Do the kernel sources correspond to the running kernel? Another thing to investigate: if I remember correctly, SuSE puts the kernel modules related to vmware in the basic kernel package (which usually is k_deflt, but it depends on your CPU). I have just unistalled the VMware 3.2, and have installed the VMware that follows SuSE. But if I run vmware-config.pl, it again will make:
Trying to find a suitable vmmon module for your running kernel.
None of VMware Workstation's pre-built vmmon modules is suitable for your running kernel. Do you want this script to try to build the vmmon module for your system (you need to have a C compiler installed on your system)? [yes] yes
Argument "gcc 3" isn't numeric in numeric ge (>=) at /usr/bin/vmware-config.pl line 1477, <STDIN> line 3. What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running kernel? [/usr/src/linux/include]
The directory of kernel headers (version 2.4.19) does not match your running kernel (version 2.4.19-4GB). Even if the module were to compile successfully, it would not load into the running kernel.
What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running kernel? [/usr/src/linux/include]
It IS necessary to run the vmware-config.pl ?.
Yes it is (in order to configure the daemons). You have played with your kernel? Do the kernel sources correspond to the running kernel?
No I have not played with the kernel.
Another thing to investigate: if I remember correctly, SuSE puts the kernel modules related to vmware in the basic kernel package (which usually is k_deflt, but it depends on your CPU). If you played with it, the modules may be missing. Which version of SuSE are running?
Using SuSE 8.1.

TC> - - Do you really need to recompile everything? The VMWare provided by SuSE is TC> precompiled correctly. I was a little surprised to see this. We purchased VMWare separately. Which version of SuSE do you have? Thank you. -- __________________________ DJ mailto: linux_programmer@hotmail.com
