That'll work too, but it won't works for the kernel as well, you can't simply copy the kernel to replace the one your using, you have to cat it or boot to a different kernel. So might as well get in practice. Hmm, sounds like you recompiled your kernel, or installed a new one. When you do this, you actually have to move two files into where ever you put your kernels, the System.map file and zImage (which is the kernel, and gets moved to 'vmlinuz' usu.). I have never seen this do anything awful to a system, but you want to correct it immediately (I've also never run with an incorrect System.map for more than a minute or two). Have a lot of fun. /boot/System.map is from a different kernel version than the one you're running. Just copy the current System.map from /usr/src/linux to /boot to fix that. Or use make zlilo to install your kernel after compiling, this will automatically copy System.map to /boot.
