[opensuse] Where have categories gone in Address Book?
I've just upgraded to oS 11.3 + KDE4.4. I use Kontact for e-mail, addresses etc. and I've got several mail lists set up based on categories. These mail lists are still available in Kmail, but I cannot find how to add a category to a person's entry in the new look Address Book. Has it gone, or am I looking in the wrong place? Or is there another way to select contacts to add to a mail list? Bob -- Registered Linux User #463880 FSFE Member #1300 GPG-FP: A6C1 457C 6DBA B13E 5524 F703 D12A FB79 926B 994E openSUSE 11.3, Kernel 2.6.34.12-desktop, KDE 4.4.4 Intel Core2 Quad Q9400 2.66GHz, 8GB DDR RAM, nVidia GeForce 9600GT -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
I encountered this a few months ago while running Factory and upgrading to KDE 4.4. In short, KAddressbook is in the midst of a transition dependent upon Akonadi. Completion is scheduled for 4.5. The data is all still there, but the structure has changed, making it inaccessible for now. Needless to say, this has upset a lot of people. The only solution I found is to manually pull out this piece from Kontact and replace just it with 4.3.5. Fwiw, Fedora and Kubuntu have the same issue. The details are here (along with a few temper tantrums), including the tarball replacement with instructions: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=222678 https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=233078

This looks like a combination of package mismatch, disabled Nepomuk and older akonadi-runtime version that did not initialize the suse version of mysql correctly. Can you get your friend into #opensuse-kde on IRC so we can straighten it out? Otherwise (this is what I would do on IRC) Make sure * soprano-backend-redland and soprano-backend-virtuoso are installed * akonadi-runtime and libakonadiprotocolinternals1 are in the same version and from the same source (check the output of zypper se -s -i akonadi). If they are not, please note these down and tell me as it would likely indicate a packaging error. * Nepomuk is enabled in the Desktop Search settings (Strigi can be left off) Then * issue an 'akonadictl stop' and wait until 'akonadictl status' reports that it is stopped * delete the akonadi config and cache directories ~/.local/share/akonadi and ~/.config/akonadi * akonadictl start. Did that solve the version mismatch errors? Data loss shouldn't be possible. Worst case, Akonadi/KAddressbook is now not configured to display the user's data, but it's still in a std.vcf file somewhere. Remember Akonadi is just a cache. Do the removal of the akonadi caches/setup step as outlined in my earlier mail again, with akonadi stopped. The mysql_install_db step should no longer be necessary since the newer akonadi-runtime package does this for you. If the user did not have the addresses stored in ~/.local/share/contacts, KAddressbook won't have an address book setup by default that points at the correct location (it did, created by the migrator, but we blew that setup away by removing .config/akonadi). In kaddressbook, if it only shows Personal Contacts, File->New->Add Address Book. The next step depends a little on how the user's existing contacts are stored. I assume it's the < 4.4.0 default, all contacts in one vcard file somewhere. Add an addressbook of the type "VCard File" and set its path to the vcard file - the default would be <user's home dir>/.kde4/share/apps/kabc/std.vcf . Now the user will have an entry std.vcf in the Address Books column, click it and it should show the contacts. If it's not a vcard file, it's probably a vcard directory, use that addressbook type instead. This is what made the "groups" option available for me. You might just try exporting your present addresses, making a new book and then importing the exported addresses. will help. I have a friend who
cannot access his kaddressbook because the
akonadi kabc module will not
run, Akonadi Server Self-Test -
KAddressBook
MySQL server log contains errors Nepomuk search service not
registered at D-Bus
Server protocol version is too old
This looks like a combination of package mismatch, disabled Nepomuk and older akonadi-runtime version that did not initialize the suse version of mysql correctly. Can you get your friend into #opensuse-kde on IRC so we can straighten it out?
Otherwise (this is what I would do on IRC)
Make sure * soprano-backend-redland and soprano-backend-virtuoso are installed * akonadi-runtime and libakonadiprotocolinternals1 are in the same version and from the same source (check the output of zypper se -s -i akonadi). If they are not, please note these down and tell me as it would likely indicate a packaging error. * Nepomuk is enabled in the Desktop Search settings (Strigi can be left off)
Then * issue an 'akonadictl stop' and wait until 'akonadictl status' reports that it is stopped * delete the akonadi config and cache directories ~/.local/share/akonadi and ~/.config/akonadi * akonadictl start. If there is still a "MySQL server log contains errors" on starting kaddressbook, do ** mysql_install_db --datadir=$HOME/.local/share/akonadi/db_data/
