Firefox default email prog.
Hey Group; Has anyone spotted where Firefox sets it's default email program. It is set to Evolution and I would rather set it to Thunderbird. That is because Evolution blows up and fails to work. -- 73 de Donn Washburn Hpage:" http://www.hal-pc.org/~n5xwb " Ham Callsign N5XWB Email: " n5xwb@hal-pc.org " 307 Savoy St. HAMs : " n5xwb@arrl.net " Sugar Land, TX 77478 BMW MOA #: 4146 - Ambassador LL# 1.281.242.3256 " http://counter.li.org " #279316

I did a google search and found this:
Anyone know how to set the default email client for firefox - when I click on a mailto link now it brings up evolution but I want it to bring up kmail.
from the firefox documentation http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/releases/1.0.html#profilefolder This quote applies "7. Where is the mail client? Firefox works with whatever mail client is the default on your system. However, we recommend Mozilla Thunderbird, our next generation email client and the perfect complement to Firefox." -- Paul Cartwright Registered Linux user#367800

OK - then where is it set? It is not a "env" variable not is it available doing a Search in Control Center. As a matter of fact "email client" appears to be locked out. Maybe a KDE 3.5 bug. -- 73 de Donn Washburn Hpage:" http://www.hal-pc.org/~n5xwb " Ham Callsign N5XWB Email: " n5xwb@hal-pc.org " 307 Savoy St. HAMs : " n5xwb@arrl.net " Sugar Land, TX 77478 BMW MOA #: 4146 - Ambassador LL# 1.281.242.3256 " http://counter.li.org " #279316

http://opensource.weblogsinc.com/entry/7672458579278871/ I found a solution here (I was pointed there by this comment at NewsForge - thanks, Anonymous Reader!): http://www-es.fernuni-hagen.de/~jfh00/blog/040916.html. It’s in German, but don’t freak, because the key line is in good ol’ American. Here’s what you do. First, close Firefox. It shouldn’t be running when we’re editing these files. Look for your Firefox profile folder. It’s probably at /home/[user]/.mozilla/firefox/default, but it may be elsewhere. If you’re not sure where it is, then follow this link, which leads to the excellent MozillaZine Knowledge Base and should tell you what you need to know. In your profile folder, you may see a file named user.js. If you do, great - we're going to be editing that file. If you don't, then create a file named user.js using your favorite text editor. Open user.js and enter the following line: user_pref("network.protocol-handler.app.mailto","/usr/bin/thunderbird"); This is key: if you don't want to use Thunderbird as the mail program that opens when you click on a mailto link, or if you've installed Tbird in a non-standard location, you need to change /usr/bin/thunderbird to a different path. In my case, I used /usr/bin/kmail. (If you use pine and want a brilliant solution to this problem, read this message at NewsForge from someone who got pine to work - use user.js instead of prefs.js, however). Save user.js, restart Firefox, and find a web page with an email link on it. Click on the link, and an email ready to compose, with the email address already filled in, should open using your preferred email program. Cool. -- Paul Cartwright Registered Linux user#367800

Open user.js and enter the following line:
user_pref("network.protocol-handler.app.mailto","/usr/bin/thunderbird"); [etc.]
Thanks for this tip! I had to guess that
/.mozilla/firefox/y8f9fahn.default
might be the place to put user.js in my installation, since
I couldn't match your description above (and there was no
user.js anywhere).
Anyway, I went there and did that (substituting xfmail for
thunderbird), restarted firefox, and clicked on a "mailto:",
and there it was!
Sublimely simple. But how on earth could one guess?!!
Now all that's needed to complete the picture is a "Mail"
option in one of the dropdown menus (like in Mozilla).
Probably there's a similar way of doing it, but it's beyond
my guessing.
Thanks, and best wishes,
Ted.

This is really the hard way. There's a generic configuration editor built into both Mozilla and Firefox. Enter "about:config" into the address bar and you'll see a complete list of all configuration parameters. Type "mail" into the filter field and you can easily find "network.protocol-handler.app.mailto" if it's there. If it's not present, just add it (right click and choose "New") and give it the value you want. If it is there, double click and enter the new value. I use a script I wrote to invoke KMail. It even handles mailto URLs with things like the "subject=" attributes.

Thanks! Paul and Randall I think that fixed it. Will try and run down a site to try it on. It does now showup in about:config. Nice think is that variables in Germany or English look the same. Randall R Schulz wrote:

And this should be a button somewhere in the options panel. Having to remember an obscure command like that in this day and age is silly, IMHO... -- _____________________________________ John Andersen

Been reading all this about Thunderbird, but to my surprise my Firefox browser does not even have a menu item Tools->Read Mail or Tools->New Message... although in Firefox Help these menu items are mentioned. I am also confused because the default installation of SuSE 10 does not seem to have installed Thunderbird at all - can I find it on the SuSE DVD ? Regards Roy Leembruggen
