Hi. I have a PrinterServer HP JetDirect 500x, and its running fine with my HP Deskjet 895Cxi and a Brother HL5040 printer. They are of course parallel conneted to the JetDirect, when I'm in Windows. Before and also in SuSE 9.2 I have set up the printers via the JetDirect PrinterServer, but now I'm unable to do it. If I set them up to print via TCP, I get printing all the time via the Deskjet printer even I have choosen the Brother to be printed on. So the problem is, that the printing is going out only to the port1 where the DJ895Cxi is connected, and there's no switching to port 2, where the Brother is connected. This was the reason why I downloaded the HP software, but it will not work. Here's what I did with the downloaded software I downloaded the HP software -rwxr--r-- 1 root users 39882492 Mar 29 16:10 wja78-2988-su.selfx. This was installed ok, but after there didn't happened anything by typing http:computername:8000 I have rebooted, and have these lines from the /var/log/boot.msg file: Starting hardware scan on boot<notice>exit status of (xntpd hwscan) is (0 0) <notice>start services (cups) Starting cupsd<notice>startproc: execve (/usr/sbin/cupsd) [ /usr/sbin/cupsd ], [ CONSOLE=/dev/console TERM=linux SHELL=/bin$ done <notice>exit status of (cups) is (0) <notice>start services (nscd hpwebjetd) Starting Name Service Cache Daemon<notice>startproc: execve (/usr/sbin/nscd) [ /usr/sbin/nscd ], [ CONSOLE=/dev/console TER$ done Starting hpwebjetd: /opt/hpwebjet/hpwebjetd: error while loading shared libraries: libgdbm.so.2: cannot open shared object $ /opt/hpwebjet/hpwebjetd.sh start: hpwebjetd could not be started <notice>exit status of (nscd hpwebjetd) is (0 0) <notice>start services (xdm smbfs postfix) Starting service kdm<notice>startproc: execve (/opt/kde3/bin/kdm) [ /opt/kde3/bin/kdm ], [ LC_MONETARY= CONSOLE=/dev/consol$ done Maybe its not necessary to have the HP software installed ?. How did you choose "the Brother"? What is the CUPS DeviceURI? When printing (i.e. data transfer) via plain TCP socket to a HP printserver box, normally its port 9100 is associated with its first parallel port and port 9101 is associated with its second parallel port. Use "nmap" (see the SUSE LINUX manual) to determine the ports on the printserver box. Use "netcat" (see the SUSE LINUX manual) to test whether plain data transfer via TCP socket works as expected. If data transfer via TCP socket doesn't work this way, try to print via LPD protocol. See the manual of the printserver box which LPD queue names are associated with its parallel ports (often it is something like LPT1 for the first parallel port and LPT2 for the second parallel port). How did you choose "the Brother"?
I used Yast, and choosed the "Print directly to a Network Printer". At the end of this setupseqence, I choosed the Brother from the printerlist.
What is the CUPS DeviceURI?
How do I see that?.

Well that did the trick -the port 9101-. Now I can print via the PrinterServer to both printers as was my intention.
Use "nmap" (see the SUSE LINUX manual) to determine the ports on the printserver box. Use "netcat" (see the SUSE LINUX manual) to test whether plain data transfer via TCP socket works as expected.
Ok.
If data transfer via TCP socket doesn't work this way, try to print via LPD protocol. See the manual of the printserver box which LPD queue names are associated with its parallel ports (often it is something like LPT1 for the first parallel port and LPT2 for the second parallel port).
I thank You very much for an in deep detailed description, that led to get my printers to work again.
