Hi Paul.
What are these extra options? Can one change resolution and paper type for example?

I've found one reason to use the newer print package plp in place of the Berkeley relic lprold: plp supports the -Z option on lpr (for extra options) while lpr doesn't. Are there any reasons not to switch from lprold to plp?
I'd suggest looking inside the text of apsfilter, at /usr/lib/apsfilter/bin/apsfilter, and look around there for stuff pertaining to the Z option. Or do a keyword search of the text for `duplex'.
