[S.u.S.E. Linux] Toshiba laptop vga, 16 colors, SuSE, X and Netscape
Hello, I'm having great fun with SuSE 5.1 on my Toshiba t1910cs laptop. It's a 486 sx w/ 12mb ram and a 16 color 640x480 vga display. I'm having problems with Navigator 3.04 however, that I don't understand. I am limited by my 200 mb hard drive so I installed only what I thought I really needed. I used YAST and made sure all dependencies were O.K. X works great-how does XV take a high color .jpg photo and manage to show it so well on a 16 color display??? XV is cool... Netscape on the other hand is having all kinds of trouble. I figured I would just start it with the "-mono" option, (this is kind of neat--try it) and let it just make do in black and white. When i start it I get a terrible long list of x-errors, failed requests mostly "BadDrawable", "invalid pixmap or window parameter" and "Bad gc" or something similar. It does finally open and it seems to function somewhat. The navigation buttons are tiny little things about 1mm square and there's no big "N" in the corner. I have used navigator with vga before, it wasn't pretty but I didn't get errors. I even dug out an old 2.02 version and tried that, it does the same stuff. Arena opens just fine and I can't really say that I've had trouble with anything other than Navigator. I only have 256k of video ram and 12mb of system ram and a 15+/- mb swap partition. Do I need to install some kind of mystery widget/pixmap package or is my laptop just incapable of feeding the big "N"? I tried loading with the "-install" option and "-ncols ..." all I get is a few x-errors ending in a big door slammin' bus error. Any ideas? Hi! I guess you are running xv and netscape at the same time, but you started xv earlier. try not to run both and/or use the netscape option -install that tells netscape to install a private colormap. Colors will swap heavily when switching between netscape and applications, but for the one in front colors should be ok then arnulf there are similar possibilties for xv in the Display pull down.

Hello, Actually I tried closing everything, actually opened fvwm2 and killed buttons, taskbar -you name it. The only way I can start navigator 3.04 without ending in a bus error is with the "-mono" option. All the other options I tried end in a bus error and nothing happens. Thanks, Steve Arnulf Striepecke wrote:

Steve, do you use motif? there is something with motif and netscape, an incompatibility with libXpm.so.4.8, there is an entry in the german SDB: <A HREF="http://www.suse.de/Support/sdb/netscape.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.de/Support/sdb/netscape.html</A">http://www.suse.de/Support/sdb/netscape.html</A</A>> Netscape uses to crah with an bus error in these cases (but only if motif is installed) Jürgen -- ========================================== __ _ Jürgen Braukmann e-mail: brauki@cww.de | / / (_)__ __ ____ __ Tel: 0201-743648 dk4jb@db0qs.#nrw.deu.eu | / /__/ / _ \/ // /\ \/ / ========================================== /____/_/_//_/\_,_/ /_/\_\ -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
Juergen, I'm certain that this is my problem. Unfortunately my one semester of German is not going to cut it on the translation of that web site. I checked the U.S. support database and it seems Netscape 4.04 has gotten rid of the bug. I guess I'll give it a try... Figures, I have r.p.m.s on cd for 2.02, 3.04, 3.04 gold, and communicator 4.03... Thanks for the help everyone, Steve Juergen Braukmann wrote:

Just in case Steve: ---8<--- rough transtation starts -------- We (SuSE) offer a workaround for this problem. Get the package <A HREF="ftp://ftp.suse.com/suse_update/special/ntscp_ft.tgz"><A HREF="ftp://ftp.suse.com/suse_update/special/ntscp_ft.tgz</A">ftp://ftp.suse.com/suse_update/special/ntscp_ft.tgz</A</A>> install and read /usr/local/lib/netscape/README for further information. The package contains version 4.6 of libXpm, that will work with netscape. libXpm must be installed in /usr/local/lib/netscape/. Prior to starting netscape, the env. variable LD_LIBRARY_PATH must be set to /usr/local/lib/netscape/. This can be done either using a shell function or the small script Netscape (upper case N!) from <A HREF="ftp://ftp.suse.com/suse_update/special/ntscp_ft.tgz"><A HREF="ftp://ftp.suse.com/suse_update/special/ntscp_ft.tgz</A">ftp://ftp.suse.com/suse_update/special/ntscp_ft.tgz</A</A>>. ----8<-- translation ends ---------------- AFIK there is a script Netscape with the dist., but don't ask me were. I must have this lib here as well, but I never installed it. Sometimes netscape 3.01 crashes, then I use 4.04. 4.04's mailer causes a few problems with ISDN and dial on demand here, thats why I use 3.01 cheers Jürgen -- ========================================== __ _ Jürgen Braukmann e-mail: brauki@cww.de | / / (_)__ __ ____ __ Tel: 0201-743648 dk4jb@db0qs.#nrw.deu.eu | / /__/ / _ \/ // /\ \/ / ========================================== /____/_/_//_/\_,_/ /_/\_\ -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
Juergen, I found the script on the distribution cd. I installed the rpm and reinstalled navigator 3.04. I don't think the script is doing much for me but, I did find that if I call up navigator with the command and options "navigator -visual StaticGray" that 3.04 opens with no errors and everything is displayed in grayscale. It's definitely usable on the laptop in this way so, I'm thrilled. Thanks Again! Steve P.S. Sent this from netscape mail on the laptop... Juergen Braukmann wrote:
