Yes, you need to run the installer as oracle. Part way through the install you will be prompted to run root.sh. Be sure to run that script as root.
problem i am having is that during database creation i get 03114 cannot connected to databases and initializing takes a very long long time

What version of Oracle are you installing? If it's 8i, it sounds like you need to install the glibc stubs patch from OTN. "end of file on communication channel" is a generic error message that doesn't really tell you very much. Cheers, Mark Stahlke -- Powered by SuSE Linux Just Say No To Windows
