[opensuse] HD docking station
Hello: Does such thing work with openSUSE / linux? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B073H2HLRK I think it should work as a regular USB 3/2 device. What to look for when buying some? Yes, it will probably work. But it would be better , if there is a download site for the windows driver. Then you could look into that driver for USB vendor and product ID of that device and check these IDs for linux support. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Do you mean that exact model, or just 'this type of external bay'?

I'm using the 4-port from Sharkoon, https://www.amazon.de/Sharkoon-SATA-QuickPort-Quattro-Dockingstation/dp/B004... and am very pleased with them. No issues, I've been running anything from single drives to 4-drive RAIDS on it. Disks just show up as standard USB connected /dev/sd? devices. What to look for? I had some cheap (single drive) one that claimed USB-2.0 but not even managed to get up to that speed. Also, ISTR that some don't support SMART passthrough. But I wouldn't know how to find out without having the device... -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Do you connect a single eSATA cable for the four disks? I can't read the description in German, and I can't find that ASIN code B004QZJ67S in amazon.com. But it mentions SATA in the name. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 42.2 x86_64 "Malachite" at Telcontar)

Hmm, never tried it - my docking station has no eSATA port. I'm using the USB-3.0 connection, which works fine.

Ah sorry - just typed in the name in my search, which defaults to german google... So, it does have eSATA and USB-3.0 connectors. And AFAIK SATA supports port multiplication, so probably it should work with eSATA, too. The german descriptions suggests it does ("up to 4 disks .... either USB 3.0 or eSATA") -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

We have something similar in a two drive configuration. Put two drives in it an connect to the computer and they show as two drives. Our's also will clone one drive to another of equal or larger size without being connected to the computer. -- "The time has come," the Walrus said, "To talk of many things: Of shoes-and ships-and sealing-wax- Of cabbages-and kings-- And why the sea is boiling hot- And whether pigs have wings." Wow. Then it is a very interesting device for me: this machine doesn't have USB3, but it has two eSATA ports. Previous multiple docking stations I saw needed one eSATA cable per disk. And of course, 4 disks with USB2 are too slow. Google here also finds the amazon.de article. Forcing Spanish results I see a two disk station in amazon.es. None of the providers I use in Spain are in the finds. Curious! The duo model, local find: https://www.pccomponentes.com/sharkoon-sata-quickport-duo-usb3-0-v2 It doesn't seem to have eSATA connection, only that it accepts SATA disks. I have the one disk, usb2/eSATA model myself. -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 42.2 x86_64 "Malachite" at Telcontar)

OK, as there seems to be some interest.... I do have a computer with eSATA on the MB, so I connected the unit there, with two drives in the slot. Looks like eSATA also doesn't support hotplugging (on that board), so a reboot was needed. But only one of the disks does show up! To be on the safe side I repeated with 4 disks in (one of the two could have been bad...), but no change. Not sure wether this is an issue of the mainboard or of the unit, but you shouldn't assume that 4-disk-access-via-one-eSATA just works. (and my unit only has one eSATA connector!). So if you need 4 disks you'd most likely have to use USB, i.e., get a USB3 extension card..... -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Yes; on my board some of the sata plugs support hot-plug, and others don't. I have 6 (I think) that do not, 2 that do, and two that are directly eSATA connectors on the board and of course support it.
But only one of the disks does show up!
Oh :-( Too bad.

Yes, eventually I'll get an USB3 card for this machine. But the sockets will be on the rear :-( Thank you for testing! -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R. (from 42.2 x86_64 "Malachite" at Telcontar)
