I would like very much to use WordPerfect 8 for Linux. However, I cannot, as I suspect the majority of the business world cannot. Why? Simply, because it does not interoperate with an (unfortunately) Microsoft-based office very well. Here is what I have found: WordPerfect 8 does not import Word98 documents. This is a show-stopper, as Word98 is a standard among all businesses that I deal with. WordPerfect 8 does not import Word95 documents very well. For instance, it ignores page orientation: all documents are assumed to be portrait. And it's generally unreliable. It does not strictly maintain fonts, pagination, etc. WordPerfect 8 does not automatically figure out what type of file to import. I am not going to waste my time telling WordPerfect to try each file type in turn. When I ask it to open a file, it should open it. If it cannot intelligently figure out the file type, it should try each file type in turn until it finds one that works. This is critical for companies that have been around a long time, and have archives of documents in many different formats. Once these deficiencies are fixed, I think WordPerfect would have the minimum capability I need to use it during my business day. Until then, I must continue to endure NT. <PRE> Scott, I updated from Word imperfect 7 to 8 Germany on the PC. WP8 is such a piece of crap, i won't even consider it or any thing else from Corel on my Linux box. All my word from WP 7 are now shown as Landscape instead of portrait as before. The program crashes more often than Windoze 95 does. WP is for the MickySoft OS let it sink with it. Hey at least it's free, and if you want to let users type up a document and print it, it works nice. Many users just want to type up a nice letter, and print it. They are not into electronically sending Word98 docs anyways; since they usually have to be scanned for macro viruses. So I can say the flip side: Students, and economy-minded users will use wp8 instead of Word98, until Microsoft gives away a free version. I bought WP 7 and found it too buggy to use. It was not wasted money as it helps Corel to notice the Linux community (so I agree--thank you Corel!), but I am a little disappointed that they didn't offer an upgrade or anything. If you just want to whip out a letter, use LyX, AbiWord, Maxwell, etc. Writing a letter on Corel is like multiplying two numbers using Mathematica: it works, but it's much more than the right tool for the job. Corel is not open source and is clearly aimed at the business user. - Scott BTW, It's not really free. You must agree to the following when you download it: you get a 90 day trial period (complete with annoying little "your trial period will run out in xxx days" dialogs), then you must register it. To get online help, manuals (necessary for such a complex program!), etc. you must pay the $70. zentara wrote:

Yeah, you are right. It is not open source, and when that clumsy install program failed, I thought I was hit with a virus.:-) But when some novice-computer-user says "hey can I write my uncle a letter on your box", wp8 comes in handy. You can put a graphic, clipart, and text on a single page, and print it, with about a 2 minute tutorial. I'm not experienced with unix printing, and I find it useful for doing 2-sided printing of small text files. If someone asks you to setup their old 486 to be a word processor, and dosn't want to spend a dime, nor learn anything, you could throw redhat in , and wp8. I'm keeping it on file, just for that reason. It really isn't top notch, but it loads fast, is about as easy to understand as word, and works OK, at least on my machine. Of course Corel is going to make it "less polished" than the "pay-for" version. No fonts, etc. But a "guest-user" probably wouldn't even know what a font is, and you don't have to explain what postscript is or ghostscript is. - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A</A>> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A</A>>

Personally I'm happy that WP/Corel gives you a chance to get away from M$.
WordPerfect 8 does not import Word98 documents. This is a show-stopper, as Word98 is a standard among all businesses that I deal with.
Let's set a new standard! Why not start telling everyone that you accept only WP8 files? Anyone with WP(4.2 to 8) Dos/Win or Linux version could send you files. Heck, you could GIVE everyone free copys of WP8 if they need it. (Be a great way to spread Linux!)
WordPerfect 8 does not import Word95 documents very well. For instance, it ignores page orientation: all documents are assumed to be portrait. And it's generally unreliable. It does not strictly maintain fonts, pagination, etc.
Are you sure that this is a problem of WP and not M$? To be honest if it had the same fonts, pagination etc, then all you'd have is M$ Word. Which, of course, I don't want.
WordPerfect 8 does not automatically figure out what type of file to import. I am not going to waste my time telling WordPerfect to try each file type in turn. This is true. But on the other hand I used W$ publisher and I had to use only .pub. Under WP I can put what ever I want. That would make it hard for WP to tell what the file is. Also #2 one thing I like about doing it myself is I have 3 ways to import ascii files. I've saved myself alot of time by letting WP change hard carrage returns into soft ones.
Once these deficiencies are fixed, I think WordPerfect would have the minimum capability I need to use it during my business day. Until then, I must continue to endure NT. Thank you very much for your attention,

This note is not a flame Scott. I can see where you have to be able to work with your people. But for the last 12 years I've used WP (4.2) and to get WP8 was great. I've never used word and see no need for it. I, one time, tried the German version of Word. The install was shit. It took over my machine and overwrote allot of my files. After about two days I shitcanned it. But for about 3 months after I was having German error messages pop up. I ended up having to delete the entire Win 3.1 disk and reinstalling to just have English error messages! Later!
