Re: [SuSE Linux] ppp - isp - how ?
d Id say the easiest method is to get wvdial. One important note is to make sure youinstall it correctly ;-) The rpm appears easiest but I had better luck with the source download the wvdial tar.tarthan untar it as in tar xzf wvdialfull filename.tar.tar then you should have a dir called wvdial cd to it and type make it goes through its compiling then stops then type make install again it installs the program *Important note here* Before you do this you need gcc so simply go to yast and create new configuration...look in development... select gcc than install that. Then the wvdial will compile effortlessly and you'll have your dialup in a fe min ;-) next is to get the wvdial config file so once its installed type wvdialconf /etc/wvdial.conf this will dectect your modem and create a config file in /etc if your modem is setup correctly it will dectect it. if it goes rite then edit the file /etc/wvdial.conf add your phone # username and password save it then type wvdial and you're connected! If you have any trouble post it here and someone will try and help. You can get wvdial in my sig have fun! rob <A HREF="http://www.connix.com/~dizzy73/LBM.htm"><A HREF="http://www.connix.com/~dizzy73/LBM.htm</A">http://www.connix.com/~dizzy73/LBM.htm</A</A>> Powered By S.u.S.E 5.3 - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A</A>> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A</A>>
Do anyone have any suggestions for me: I have bought a new DELL last week, with 15G hard drive. I want to partition it and have three OSs, win95/98, NT and Linux. I have never used Linux before, but I attended a seminar on Red-Hat linux, etc...I am pretty good with Unix. I am a student, trying to enter the unbridled world of Linux:) Thank you for all the comments in advance. Hi, I have been having problems with my display, and I found something on the XFree86.org page indicating that I needed to install 3.3.3 (I have 3.3.2 which came with SuSE 5.3). So, I go to the SuSE FTP site and find the right directory, but there is tons of stuff in there. I am a Linux novice, slowly learning, but I don't know where to start. How do I know what to grab, and then what? THere must be documetnation from SuSE on what to do. . .right? I just installed 3.3.3 on my (Slakware 3.5) laptop. I saw that there were more binary files than I wanted to download, so I grabbed the 3.3.2-3.3.3.diff file from the XFree site, since I had the 3.3.2 source files on CD. This is a 500k+ file and much smaller than all the binary files. (I guess if you have access to a high speed 'net connection, getting the binaries might be a more attractive option.) Put the diff file in the top level XFree86 source directory and run gzip -d < name-of-diff-file | patch -p0 -E You need to read the doc files in the 3.3.2 source. Most importantly I think is the BUILD doc . You should find this as xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/doc/BUILD. There isn't that much to do; mainly just copy one Linux specific config file to a name called site.def - it's in the BUILD file. There is a trade off for this method besides the hassle of doing the patch and reading the docs: compile time on my (admittedly not lightning-fast P133 laptop) was around 7 hours! XFree86 is amazingly complex, IMO. It gives one a perspective on how well organized the consortium group is with their work. Doing this work did allow me to move from the proprietary Xaccel server to Xfree - 3.3.3 is the first Xfree version to support the Neomagic chip. Good luck On Thu, 24 Dec 1998, Chris Martin wrote:

I found Xfree to be amazingly hard to get working versus Xaccel. So I'm sticking with the excellent performance, ease of setup, great support and bullet-proof performance of Xaccel. -Dee W.D.McKinney (Dee) deem@wdm.com Faith is acting on your passions & beliefs. - To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A</A>> and the archiv at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A</A>>
I didn't find as difficult as much as time consuming. The directions given in the BUILD file seemed straight-forward. After copying the file as mentioned previously, I just did the 'make', repeated with each one of the options as specified in the BUILD (also see 'relnotes') and it worked 1st time.
