I am no expert, but it seems: 1) hdc is first being recognized as ATAPI 2) then, SCSI emulation fails I believe that the problem is 1) and, my best guess is that you are failing to pass the following: append="hdc=ide-scsi" So, enter that in your /etc/lilo.conf (say after, label = linux, or whta's appropriate in your case) and re-run lilo. Then reboot.
