[SLE] Minimum install using zipdrive possible?
Hi, I want to install suse 6.0/6.3 on a 486 with 200 MB free for partitioning etc. The only think i want to be able to do with that system is access the internet with an external isdn modem (uses AT commands), for telnet etc, no X or KDE, just a minimum install. That pc doesnt have a cdrom drive nor is it in a network. The only way i can install linux is using a zipdrive. Is that possible, and what files should i copy from the suse cd(s) to the zipdisk in order to install suse? I did just that this weekend... except I only had 80MB to play with ;-)

I'm not sure whether this is possible. I did my install over a network. You might be able to do a 'Hard Disk' install. When this happens, you have to copy the files you want onto your hard disk (in this case the zip drive, and assuming that you can access the zip during install). You then point YaST at that and go ahead. The full details are in the SuSE manual (page 68 in my SuSE 6.1 manual). If you want to know what packages, I can send you my configuration that I managed to fit in 80MB of disk space, so you should be alright (but remember that you'll have to put other stuff from the SuSE CD on the zip disk as well). Have fun ;-) Chris -- Apologies to everyone who has been waiting for replies off me over the past few weeks - I've been away from my computer. Thanx I was gonna check my manual but forgot to take it with me so didnt have it near me ;-). I'll let you guys know when I succeed ;-). Chris Reeves wrote:

I'm trying to install suse 6.3 evaluation from a zipdrive, booting with the bootdisk and the modules disk. But the problem is, the zip module wont load. These are the error messages I get after switching to console 3 (with alt-F3): Executing: "insmod /modules/ppa.o" /modules/ppa.o: unresolved symbol parport_unregister_device /modules/ppa.o: unresolved symbol enumerate /modules/ppa.o: unresolved symbol register_device /modules/ppa.o: unresolved symbol claim /modules/ppa.o: unresolved symbol release What do I do about this? I don't know if this'll fix your problems, but it's always better to use 'modprobe' rather than 'insmod' if possible. Running 'modprobe' loads all dependencies for the module you're trying load as well as the specified module itself.

I know its better to use modprobe, but i've had the same problems trying to mount my zipdrive on another system, and modprobe didnt fix it (problem still exists). But, still, i'm using the /disks/bootdisk image file for a bootdisk, and /disks/modules for modules disk, and when booting, i cant load the ppa module..snif.... Chris Reeves wrote:

On Tue, 09 May 2000, Bart Schouten wrote: You mentioned that you are using 6.1 I believe. I am not sure if it was included with your version, but on 6.4 there is a mini-HOWTO for installing linux from a parport zip drive. It's dated 04-29-98. It is based on a slackware install however. Hope this helps a little. Damian
