[SLE] relational database for linux
Hello all. I'm looking for a high performance, stable and transaction supporting rdbms for Linux. ;-) I know I want too much. mysql is good candidate for speed. But since it doesn't support transcations and this project contains some financial operations I need a more advanced database server. I thinking about Sybase and Interbase. If you have experiences about these databases please let me know. You can also look into postgress , its gpl and handles all the bells and whistles. Its on the cd set if you want to try it. ypou can also post tho the postgress list for info from the ysy admins and harder core postgress users there. At 05:50 PM 5/9/2000 +0300, Tuncay Baskan wrote:

Interbase wins hands down for me. Been using it for a good few years, for everything from small 'desktop' apps to 200 user systems. Obviously you will lose out slightly on speed over mySQL but gain transactions, stored procedures, triggers, UDF's (embedded shared objects in your language of choice) and the best multi-versioning architecture there is. Phil , are you sing it in a mixed linux /win95/8 eviorment ? ie windoes apps accessing linux interbase on a linux server ? Any easier to set up in this type enviormant as compared to postgress. Why interbase as opsed to postgress ? Thanks Samy At 01:15 PM 5/9/2000 +0100, Phil Shrimpton wrote:

Hi,
Phil , are you sing it in a mixed linux /win95/8 eviorment ? ie windoes apps accessing linux interbase on a linux server ?
I am currently running Interbase on a number of platforms, Linux, Windows, Solaris, NetWare and even OpenVMS. The actual database file(s) are platform independent, you can just 'copy' them between platforms (as long as no one is using them of course). Most of my 'desktop' client applications are on Windows, but I use PHP / Perl / Java severlets on Linux/Solaris and I do a lot of system processing (imports/exports etc.) on the server
Any easier to set up in this type enviormant as compared to postgress.
Just change the connection string to the DB from '/usr/interbase' to 'C:\Program files\Interbase\' no code changes in client or server needed.
Why interbase as opsed to postgress ?
I have been using Interbase for years, I keep trying out Postgress, but IMHO Interbase is always that bit better. Interbase also sticks to ANSI SQL standards, which some times is a bad thing, but it does make your server code easy to port to other RDBMS like Oracle if you need that extra bit more (and a lighter wallet). Hello again. I want to add that closed source rdbms' doesn't irritate me. I love open source software. But there is one important point about databases and accounting software. Those problems were solved twenty and thirty years ago. I know mysql is a fine database system and postgres is a fine rdbms. But I need a better solution. Of course there are oracle, illustra etc. Tuncay Baskan wrote:
