I recently purchased SuSE 9.0 Pro and was wondering where I can obtain the boot.iso file for SuSE 9 so that I can do network installs over the LAN from my NFS server? I thought in SuSE 8.2, this file was located in the /boot directory on CD1. I don't see any .iso files on any of the five CDs in 9.0. Thanks, Chris
It's not on the DVD and there was nothing up for ftp on the SuSE site yesterday, so I guess it doesn't exist yet. Regards Sid. Chris Purcell wrote:

Why can't you use CD1 for that purpose? Just put an info file on a floppy pointing to your installation source, boot off CD1 and there you go. An example info file follows: (use your own IPs, of course) Language: en_US Install: http://172.21.1.126/stuff/SuSE/9.0 HostIP: 172.21.1.187 Netmask: 255.255.0.0 Gateway: 172.21.0.1 Server: 172.21.1.126 Nameserver: 172.21.1.126 Textmode: 1 AutoYaST: http://172.21.1.126/stuff/autoyast/neck.xml Regards, -Kastus

I guess I'll just use CD1. It would be nice if SuSE included a small boot.iso file that will launch the network installation and detect all of your hardware automatically, kind of how Red Hat does it. I've done lots of networks installs of RH, but only once with SuSE. I thought I remembered using a boot CD for the SuSE installation (I think it was 8.2). I can't imagine that SuSE would include the ISO with 8.2, but not with 9.0. I'll have to look into that info file. Also, does SuSE include a utility similar to Red Hat's Kickstart so that you can do automated network installs? Thanks, Chris

What's the difference between boot.iso and CD1? Well, technically, you can burn your own CD with info file included, but there is really no need for that. Also you can use PXE for network install if your NIC supports it.
I've done lots of networks installs of RH, but only once with SuSE.
I am using both RH kickstart from network and SuSE AutoYaST, and believe me, AutoYaST is much superior.

There is nothing preventing the use of CD1 to boot the kernel only and then proceed with installation from some network source.

SuSE does include AutoYaST2 (http://www.suse.com/~nashif/autoinstall/index.html) which, IMHO, is superior to kickstart. Regards, -Kastus

No difference except it takes longer to boot because its not a slimmed down version of the CD. No big deal, I'll use CD1.

Cool, I'll give AutoYast a try. Thanks for your help, Chris
Here is a link to a SuSE document about automating YAST installs http://portal.suse.com/sdb/en/2001/02/cg_autoinstall.html Chris Purcell wrote:
