[S.u.S.E. Linux] Problems configuring XFree86
Hello friends. I have worked in the last year with REDHAT 4.1,4.2 and 5.0. A while ago I decided to install SuSE Linux 5.1 and all work fine. I didn't configure Xfree86 because i knew that it didn't support my graphic card ATI RAGE PRO 3D AGP. When finding out that the version existed SuSE 5.2 that if it supported this graphic card I have installed it (I have installed the configuration XExtend-Extends XFree86 system) without problems except with the XFree86. Well from Yast, (a good utility) or putting from the prompt (entering as root) xf86config have gone giving him the data of my mouse, graphic card, monitor, etc., etc. Now when I try to execute startx it leaves me a message that says: "The file XF86_xxxx (binary of X-Server) doesnŽt seem to be a binary file. Please check it or / and install a new X-Seerver-binary. IŽm aborting now" For sure it is a foolishness, something evident that for my lack of experience with Linux SuSE have passed for high but I request you your help . Sorry for my Inglish. Thaks in advance. fmc@redestb.es -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

fmc,The Xserver is not installed. Mount the first cd and the servers are in /cdrom/suse/x3 (&x4). Use yasst or rpm to install and then rerun XF86Setup (the link to an existant server would not have been completed during your preliminary configuration if the actual file in /usr/X11R6/bin was not present). You should be fine from there. Regards, Stu -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e

So far the HowTo's, Man's and whatever else I can find at the LDP haven't helped resolve this problem. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. check wether the X-server is installed and wether the links are set correctly. brauki@slartibartfast:/usr/X11R6/bin > ls X* -l lrwxrwxrwx 1 root root 16 May 1 12:37 X -> /var/X11R6/bin/X .. and a few more... /var/X11R6/bin/X is, again a link. It links to the "real" X-server, XF86_S3 in the /usr/X11R6/bin directory. have a nice weekend -nice sunny spring day here- to nice to spend it configuring things ;-)) Jürgen -- ========================================== __ _ Jürgen Braukmann e-mail: brauki@cww.de | / / (_)__ __ ____ __ Tel: 0201-743648 dk4jb@db0qs.#nrw.deu.eu | / /__/ / _ \/ // /\ \/ / ========================================== /____/_/_//_/\_,_/ /_/\_\ -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e
