software installation over NIS
I want to install e.g. gimp on an 18 node network with a single NIS server. I can export the necessary rpms from the server but can't see anyway around having to go to each client in turn and install it by hand on each machine. I've thought about vnc but there has to be a simpler method. tia steve. SuSE 8.1

There definitely is an easier way of getting your systems up to date. If you like you can have it fully automated... It's explained in the README that you can find on this url: http://cvs.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/viewcvs.cgi/apt4rpm/apt4rpm/client/
As you'll see the scripts use the Advanced Package Tool (apt). More about apt at: http://linux01.gwdg.de/apt4rpm
In your case it may be better to have your own local apt repository. This can be created with the tool apt4rpm, which you can get from http://apt4rpm.sourceforge.net
Hi Richard, hi everyone. Sounds good but It doesn't look as if it will get the packages there for me in the first place. Or will it? Thanks, Steve.
Steve, A quick/dirty method would be to allow root shell (rsh) access to all machines in your NIS netgroup, then use a remote shell script to run the "rpm -i" command on each target in turn. Just another skeleton to work with (plenty in my cupboard ;-) Damian -- Damian O'Hara using: SuSE Linux 8.0 9:57am up 38 days, 1:06, 14 users, load average: 0.13, 0.16, 0.14

A more secure way than rsh would be ssh. You can do anything (plus) with ssh that you can do with rsh. Just use ssh and the commandline rpm tool and you are all set. -- Kelly L. Fulks Home Account
