There are some websites that use flash as an integral part of the design. Without flash you basically get a blank screen. No data.
Websites that use flash obviously do not want blind visitors - AFAIK there is no screen reader that translates flash to audio (or braille). OK, so why would these sites want me?
It's not that these sites want me, I want them. For example, many touristic sites (B&Bs, small hotels, restaurants) are flash only. I'm quite sure that they didn't choose that technology. Some small company came in, presented some shiny lively method to be "on the Web", and the owners purchased it. Prices are ridiculously small for such work, you won't get real designs that way. (This is a statement of fact, I often contract good communication designers.) How shall those owners know that it's bad technology that they choose? They are no technicians. Most of them don't even know to operate the Windows system properly. E.g., I have restaurants that send around their changing menus be email -- in Excel format... Those few restaurant owners that I talked about that couldn't even understand the problems. One of them asked me to change it and set up a new process. When she heard about our hourly consulting rates, she staid with the Excel solution... And if I'm planning a holiday or some trip, I want to know about the opportunities for eating, tasting wine, going out, and sleeping. And I won't let technical snobbiness get into the way of that information gathering. Ultimately, freedom has a cost. You have to pay the cost if you want freedom. Any website built by or for somebody who doesn't understand or care why they should use another approach is an excellent target for any criminals looking to exploit weak websites. So they're exactly the type of websites on which it can be dangerous to enable bug-prone features like flash or javascript. I think by now every non-tech person knows that: 1. it's important to have a website 'mobile ready' 2. iPhone is one of the leading mobile platform 3. iPhone has no flash support If they care about their business it is something to highly consider. Furthermore Gnash does really quite a good work with most websites. I have been running Flash-free for now almost 2 years because flash was making my OS freeze (one of the deciding reason) and Gnash-free for 6 months. Why Gnash-free? So marketers looking at their logs see that they have visitors without flash installed (which doesn't happen when using Gnash). Either way we can all rant as much as we want, it's not like it is our decision to have Flash on Linux or not. And yes I do have a virtual machine which I (rarely) launch when I really need to see a flash-only website. Sorry, but I do not agree here. "Every not-tech person" does not know about a difference between rendering on standard computers and mobile thingies. Maybe this person knows of iPhones. But I doubt this person will know that an iPhone does not have flash support.

Yes, one should guess so. Looking at the sheer count of people, it is important. But as someone who sells something, you will have most cont(r)acts made from standard PC, for example those in the offices. I do not know the economical relativity ;-) of users of mobile devices. *sigh* Werner -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

I did not. And I'll forget soon. - -- Cheers / Saludos, Carlos E. R.
