Thanks to everyone who's replied to my question about upgrading to 8.2 via modem. Thanks especially to those who offered to send their retail CDs on to me; however, I've got it into my head to try this crazy FTP thing, and I won't be dissuaded. (Hey, that's what Wget is FOR. Wind it up, check on it every couple of days, feed and water...) Basically, my plan of attack is to wget the whole directory tree, once it's available, then slap in the boot disks and get the party started. The trick is where to put the files. My Linux partition, of course, will be going away when I install 8.2, while my Windows partition isn't nearly big enough to hold six gigs of files. (I only put it in at all for my brother.) So I need to carve some space off my Linux partition and make it into a DOS drive to store the files on. (Good thing I don't have a ton of MP3s or anything.) I'm not sure how to go about this, though. Can anyone talk me through reducing the size of my Linux partition by 6 gigs without trashing everything on it, then turning the freed space into a DOS drive? I could probably figure the latter part out myself, but I don't want to take a chance with the former part...

On another computer with an ftp server. :-| I only tried once installing from a directory, and I couldn't, yast complained of already mounted dir. It could perhaps work if you put them on a different hard disk, some body told me it worked for him. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
I haven't had any responses to my question about reducing the size of an existing Linux partition so I can create another one to store data for an FTP installation in. (Well, I had one response, but it didn't address that question.) Does that mean it can't be done, or did the question just get lost in the shuffle?

The safest and easiest way to do this is to obtain one of the partition managing programs. www.acronis.com <----- Partition Expert www.powerquest.com <---- Partition Magic -- +----------------------------------------------------------------------------+ + Bruce S. I did not answer how to reduce size of your linux partition because you will not able to install suse from it (same hard disk install). I couldn't do it, and heard people complaining about it. If you want to try, go ahead... Then you should specify what type of partitions you have, reiser, ext2, whatever. For example, there is resize_reiserfs. Or try partition magic (comercial and very good). -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson

It's a reiser partition, I believe. I tried following the rezise_reiserfs instructions, but I was sawing off the branch I was sitting on, I think; I wasn't able to both unmount / and resize it. So I probably need to whip up a boot disk or something. As for Partition Magic, if I could afford it, I'd buy 8.2 instead and do the repartitioning for 8.3 when I installed it... n_n'

Yes, of course: you have to do it from the rescue cd - assuming it has the resize program. But do have a browse at the reiser web page, just in case they have something better, or they mention some other program. I have never tried to resize a linux partition, and those instructions scared me some. Also, be aware that some people - including me - have reported not being able to install suse using only one hardisk: ie, with the files on a partition of the same disk where you are going to install. It could work with suse 8.2, who knows :-? But if after downloading all those files with a modem you find you can not install, I guess you will be very dissapointed... Another way would be to create - somehow - a CD with the files for a minimun install. After you have a minimun system rurrning, this can be updated by ftp or from files on another partition.

I guess so. :-} I think I read about one distro that had a copy of it - it could be Mandrake or Caldera, I don't know. Otherwise, you could buy the 8.2 update version, which is cheaper, or convince some local friend to share it with you. -- Cheers, Carlos Robinson
