[opensuse] Kde4 - plasmoids not working
ref: nvidia 8800 compiz-fusion opensuse 11.1 64b Problem: system tray plasmoid freezes system and requires restart X and resetting kde4 What I did: 1. remove panel 2. add the following plasmoids: application launcher system tray Results: 1. Application launcher shows up in the LUQ and works ok. Can be moved. 2. System Tray show up in the LUQ but - the icons are all crunched up - there is no bar on the R side (the one that show red X, config, etc) - there is no way to move it - the icons are flashing - I can Rmouse on the icon and close one by one. - I have not way to close this plasmoid. - R mouse in any place does not work - the tool box in the RUQ does not work - the application launcher does not work - ctrl-bkspace x2 go to root and remove the 2 files from ./kde4/share/conf and reset kde4. - I have done that few times, rebooting the computer etc. 3. Now Playing - it comes OK - it does not show anything when amarok is playing. - I tried to start amarok, before, after, use different type of files like ogg, mp2, m4a and nothing works. Well, the Now Playing is not important. The System Tray is key if I want to eliminate the panel. It is the one from the retail box IF it has not been upgraded with some the online upgrades. I did not download anything from the factory. I am using the community repositories only.
It makes a very big difference if you upgrade to the Factory version. Use the 1-Click from the Wiki and it'll drop in the right repository. The Factory version is the one that is closest to being in a "working" state, and if you're planning on tinkering at all in KDE4 beyond just using it as-is, then you really should (in my opinion) be using the Factory builds only. A huge percentage of the things being discussed here on the list as not-working are fixed in the Factory builds. Yes, and in that page under the Factory KDE Project (KDE 4.2.x) section, you have a 1-Click install for 11.1. Click it and it'll load the repos you need and you should be able to do a clean update to... currently... 4.1.96. I would not recommend the links from UNSTABLE KDE Project (KDE 4.3 Devel) unless you're willing to really experiment. That's a good choice, if you cannot handle warnings you should not use any buildservice repos, as they might brake from time to time. Yet in this case it is a simple matter of KDE 4.2 having different packages than KDE 4.1, so you have to remove the ones that only exist for 4.1 or 4.0. You are using the default KDE4.1 from the standard KDE4 repo for 11.1. Things will work OK with that version as long as you do not stray too far from the defaults given by the install. If you tinker and play with the settings, chances are things will break in strange ways.... as you have experienced. You asked "Where from?" Open a konsole, do kquitapp plasma, wait until it is closed, do it again if it restarts automatically, if it is dead remove plasma* from ~./kde4/share/config/, restart plasma, do not add anything to the default panel or desktop, wait some seconds, quit plasma, wait some seconds, start it again. If the panel is restored correctly, somethign you add make plasma crash on logout and hence not save its settings correctly. Not all plasmoids are meant for the panel, so if one messes it up, do not try again.
