Re: [opensuse] opensuse 12.1 locks up
Someone asked if I was using packagekit - I wasn't. As I understand it packagekit is hooked into something that runs in the panel, I normally shut down the panel item if I ever see it. But I always update using Yast2, so it was not the cause of any issues for me. If I were you, I'd use speedtest.net and run a few speed tests - see if flash does in fact cause you any issues. If it does, try using you system without any flash pages active and see if it is more stable. If you can run speedtest several times without issues, then your problem may be different than mine. It would be good to be able to narrow down something that definitly causes it to crash. Your problem could still be due to hardware issues such as bad RAM or bad BIOS optimisations. Some BIOS's have options to load safe-defaults or load optimised-defaults - might be worth trying. It might also be worth booting into memtest86 (the SUSE installer DVD has a memory test option which is probably just memtest86). On Sat, 28 Jan 2012 14:15:42 George Olson wrote:

When I went to 12.1 I began experiencing crashes. In my case it was a BIOS setting that was completely stable under 11.4, but became unstable on 12.1. I discovered this was easily triggered by the more agressive flash player implementation that I installed with 12.1.
Your issue might not be the same as mine, but as you mentioned you may have been running firefox, you might want to check this forum thread and see how I resolved my issue:

I see that you found some hardware switches on your motherboard, which when adjusted, made your system stable. I checked my motherboard manual and it doesn't look like I have any of those switches.
It doesn't look like it is possible to go back to flash player 10 with opensuse 12.1, as I don't see it in the repositories.
I also noticed a comment on your previous forum thread that we should not use packagekit. I notice that in my logs packagekit is seen several times right before the crash. Is there a way to disable packagekit?
I am using apper to do regular updates, which if I understand right, communicates with the packagekit daemon to do system updates. Should I uninstall packagekit, apper, or both?

Ok, thanks for the tip. I will try speedtest and see if flash causes any issues. I can also research some more on the BIOS and see what other options there are. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org
