[opensuse] Can sendmail send to anotherOS?
Hello SuSE people, Here is an off-the-wall question, and the situation..... Background: My wife and I share the same email address. She wants me to download the mail and send her only "her stuff" leaving the other "garbage stuff" for me. (You know, mailing lists, jokes from my friends etc.) That was fine when we were both using 10.3. I would just use sendmail to forward her stuff to her own inbox in kmail, I have been testing 11.1 with KDE 4.2 (same computer - different partitions -multiboot ) and am about to use 11.1 regularly. (Wife no - won't deal with KDE 4 - doesn't like it) So my problem is: Can I download our mail in 11.1 and send "her stuff" to her in 10.3? Can sendmail do that? If you are careful, (mainly with uids and gids) you can share a /home file system between both oS installations and, presumably, have your MDA (sendmail, postfix, whatever) deliver to a location under /home. -- Boyd Stephen Smith Jr. ,= ,-_-. =. bss@iguanasuicide.net ((_/)o o(\_)) ICQ: 514984 YM/AIM: DaTwinkDaddy `-'(. .)`-' http://iguanasuicide.net/ \_/

As the other partition is not "running", no, I don't see how. You can "send" but there has to be another sendmail or postfix listening at the other side. Did I understand you correctly, that you are sharing the same computer, you booting into 11.1 and she 10.3? If you are using different computers, then the answer is yes, of course. Postfix, sendmail, doesn't matter. It's their job. But you might need a local DNS. - -- Cheers, Carlos E. Why not install 11.1 with KDE3? That's what I did and it works great.
Can I download our mail in 11.1 and send "her stuff" to her in 10.3? Can sendmail do that?

Yeah, then when she logs in she can start KDE 3 sessions.

Run Sendmail under 11.1 and then just do as you did before with forwarding the mail. Then she can just login to KDE 3 and use whatever she wants in that. -- Michael S. Dunsavage -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Bob: You and your wife are both grown-ups now. You can each have your own email address. Why is it so hard? They might have originally had only a single email address, when free email wasn't so easy to find or so easy to use, which neither are now prepared to give up. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Good point. There is functionality "Reply to". Old account to send mails. New account to receive emails. In KMail set default Identity to use old account to send emails, and Reply to new account. -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

Yes it is. We have had that same email address for years and years. Back when the ISP only handed out 1 email address. Yes of course either of us could get a "shiny" new one but it would be a real hassle to notify the many many people who have always communicated with us at that address.
There is functionality "Reply to". Old account to send mails. New account to receive emails.

Ummm... Guess you missed the original request. I wanted to send her mail from where I received it in 11.1 to her kmail on 10.3. I have a couple of ideas. I'll see if I can make that work. It is just splitting send and receive in KMail that can help you to skip sendmail. Create new email address for you and her. Your KMail: Settings > Configure KMail > * Identity: Tab General: your new email, that will be used to send messages Tab Advanced: set "Reply-To address" to old account * Accounts: your old and new account in old account check "Leave fetched messages on the server" and "Leave messages on the server for" or any other method to automatically delete old messages on pop server. In KMail window in Local Folders create subfolders My Mail and Her Mail. Settings > Configure Filters setup 1st filter on * Filter Criteria To: "contains" <your email address> * Filter Action Move Into Folder Local Folders/My Mail setup 2nd filter on * Filter Criteria To: "contains" <her email address> * Filter Action Move Into Folder Local Folders/Her Mail The rest in Inbox should be spam. In the same way setup her KMail, and your worries are over. You both will have independent accounts, and in rare case that one of you don't check email for time longer than set in "Leave messages on the server for" and messages are deleted form server, there will be copy on another computer. -- Regards, Rajko -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org

If you really want to send the emails, you'd have to set up her system as a receiving mail server, and forward (or 'bounce') each email to it. A solution that would require less manual work from you when new email come in, would be to set up your system (or a third machine, if you have one) with an IMAP server where you could store all your emails, both yours and hers, and you could then both read from there. He would probably do this if he had more than one machine, but the first e-mail in this thread stated that he's playing w/ both OS's on the same machine w/ different partitions and dual booting. -- Michael S. The IMAP server could be on the same machine, he would just need to install it twice (once in each OS). -- Dotan Cohen http://what-is-what.com http://gibberish.co.il א-ב-ג-ד-ה-ו-ז-ח-ט-י-ך-כ-ל-ם-מ-ן-נ-ס-ע-ף-פ-ץ-צ-ק-ר-ש-ת ا-ب-ت-ث-ج-ح-خ-د-ذ-ر-ز-س-ش-ص-ض-ط-ظ-ع-غ-ف-ق-ك-ل-م-ن-ه-و-ي А-Б-В-Г-Д-Е-Ё-Ж-З-И-Й-К-Л-М-Н-О-П-Р-С-Т-У-Ф-Х-Ц-Ч-Ш-Щ-Ъ-Ы-Ь-Э-Ю-Я а-б-в-г-д-е-ё-ж-з-и-й-к-л-м-н-о-п-р-с-т-у-ф-х-ц-ч-ш-щ-ъ-ы-ь-э-ю-я ä-ö-ü-ß-Ä-Ö-Ü Nry隊Z)z{.ﮞ˛m)z{.+Z+ib*'jW(fvǦj)hǾi

You could probably set up IMAP servers on both OSs, and have them share the place where the mail is stored. -- Dotan Cohen http://what-is-what.com http://gibberish.co.il א-ב-ג-ד-ה-ו-ז-ח-ט-י-ך-כ-ל-ם-מ-ן-נ-ס-ע-ף-פ-ץ-צ-ק-ר-ש-ת ا-ب-ت-ث-ج-ح-خ-د-ذ-ر-ز-س-ش-ص-ض-ط-ظ-ع-غ-ف-ق-ك-ل-م-ن-ه-و-ي А-Б-В-Г-Д-Е-Ё-Ж-З-И-Й-К-Л-М-Н-О-П-Р-С-Т-У-Ф-Х-Ц-Ч-Ш-Щ-Ъ-Ы-Ь-Э-Ю-Я а-б-в-г-д-е-ё-ж-з-и-й-к-л-м-н-о-п-р-с-т-у-ф-х-ц-ч-ш-щ-ъ-ы-ь-э-ю-я ä-ö-ü-ß-Ä-Ö-Ü Nry隊Z)z{.ﮞ˛m)z{.+Z+ib*'jW(fvǦj)hǾi
