Indeed, aplay hung up while trying to play a sound -- which provided a very convenient test. I've tracked down the problem and gotten my sound back, though puzzling questions (posed in another post) remain. Thanks much. Paul Abrahams

"play" It's in the sox package

cat somefile.wav > /dev/audio (or /dev/dsp as the case may be)
