hi folks, My boxed set for 9.2 came with two double layer DVDs: 1) installation, and 2) sources. My boxed set for 10.0 comes with only one double layer DVD for installation. Where is the sources DVD? Thanks -- Kind regards, M Harris <><

They stopped including it, because most people have no need for it. The sources are available via download.
The sources are available via download. hi James, Thanks ... at first I thought maybe I misplaced it! Ok, I searched on the Novell site and did not find it... can you tell me from where to download the

Sorry, I've never had the need to use them. May the source be with you. ;-)

There is no sources iso for download. Such a thing did not even exist in 9.2.

But, that would not explain why I have the 9.2 sources DVD in my hand... it came from somewhere... probably Germany. Now, as for James' comment that nobody is interested in it, I can only say that "open source" has a dearly beloved meaning to some of us and we *definitely* care about it. So, where's the source for SuSE 10. Do I need to order that disk separately? Every Linux distro in my archives has a sources CD or DVD... what happened here? kind regards,

kind regards,
The sources DVD was distributed before in the boxed set, but no more -- someone may have ripped that, which is what you have. But there has never, to my knowledge, been a separate sources iso for download. I am also sure there is no separate sources DVD for 10.x that you can order from anywhere. The sources are all bundled into the download repository. In Yast, there is no separate "sources" selection filter. In the upper right corner of the Yast screen, where the individual packages are listed, scroll to the far right -- there is a "source" column, where you can choose any source rpms that you want to install.

Thanks Darryl... I hate to be dense, I did find the source column in Yast, but the column is empty. Must I change my my install source to the download repository, or are the sources bundled somehow on my DVD/CDs? Traditionally, sources are always shipped with the binaries... that is what I always expect from a boxed set... that's one of the reasons I am willing to

Sorry, I assumed you had put one of the online installation repositories in as an installation source. If you add e.g. http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/SL-10.0-OSS/inst-source/ then you will have access to the sources. You'll also want to add http://download.opensuse.org/distribution/SL-10.0-OSS/inst-source-java/
If you want to use a mirror, there is a complete list of them at http://en.opensuse.org/Mirrors_Released_Version

I didn't say nobody was interested in the source code. I said most people don't need it.

Well, some people don't need it, and most people don't want to need it, but many people use it heavily... like my old prof used to say, "use the force, read the source". Even if you never compile one line of it... knowing how things work can be beneficial in several ways... but I spare you a lengthy monologue... :)

Try: ftp://ftp.suse.com/pub/suse/i386/10.0/iso/SUSE-10.0-DVD-SRC-GM.iso 10.0 is the only SUSE release I know of that distributed the sources this way. Hope this helps! Phil -- Philip Amadeo Saeli SuSE Linux 9.2 [... almost 10.1 ...] psaeli@zorodyne.com
