OpenOffice.org and SuSE
I note that there are now Debian packages available for OpenOffice.org 641d, and that OpenOffice is due to go 1.0 pretty soon, in time for 8.1 presumably. Will SuSE 8.1 be shipping with OpenOffice as well as StarOffice 6.0, one of the two, or has this not been decided/thought about yet? Just interested to know. Daniel Rees e: dan@dwrees.co.uk

I'm not a SuSE staffer, but... Since 8.0 had OpenOffice, I'd suspect it'll come in 8.1 as well. No point in taking out useful programs, right? But I also read StarOffice 6.0 didn't come with SuSE because it COSTS. Which would mean a more expensive SuSE distro. Personally, I don't want that. And I hope SuSE sticks with not distributing it. If I want Star Office, I'll pay for it separately, but I don't want it forced on me just to get SuSE 8.1. Kinda like xine.......
xine as it was included in 7.3 was pretty much neutered. It couldn't view dvds because of the DMCA. You would have to download the proper rpms, and you could still do that. There are SuSE rpms for the latest, greatest version on the net, on a site linked from xine.sourceforge.net. And all the "non-DeCSS" functionality in xine is in several other programs included, such as the konqueror file browser (using libmpeg it can be used to view unencrypted mpegs, for instance). There's also xmovie and a number of other programs. And xine isn't your only program for watching DVDs. Lately, I've come to prefer ogle, and VideoLan is a very interesting project with their "netcasting". Anders

StarOffice 6.0 doesn't exist yet... The recent ZDNet article on SuSE included a bit of a misunderstanding about this in that the heading implied that 8.0 did not include StarOffice, when both StarOffice 5.2 and a version of OpenOffice are included. The text clarified matters rather, but as StarOffice 6.0 is not out yet, it was really a non-story. -- ------------------- Roger Whittaker SuSE Linux Ltd The Kinetic Centre Theobald Street Borehamwood Herts WD6 4PJ ------------------ 020 8387 1482 ------------------ roger@suse.co.uk ------------------

I guess that Mandrake's distributing 6.0 in their Pro edition doesn't help with the confusion. Though I see Sun still only has a Beta page for it up on their site. Doesn't matter really. I'm *really* not wanting to see their pay-for-6.0 version in SuSE. After all, why add to the cost of SuSE (which including SO 6.0 would mean) if I don't want it? Forgetting Star Office exists and focusing on OpenOffice or a free distribution of it like SOT. If I found myself having to pay more for a distro because Star Office 6 was bundled with it, I'd quickly find a new distro. I kept seeing references to SOT and went to check out their website. I thought I might try the download but as I read the info I started to wonder what benefit they will have over Star Office 6 (once it is released.) SOT will let you have the 50mb or so download for free but suggest that you apply a 27mb patch (available only to annual subscribers) before you actually use it. I'm not against for pay applications, I just don't see whats free about a $50.00 subscription. If I'm not midstaken Star Office as provided by Sun has included hard copy manuals in the past, one of the reasons I purchase a linux dist is the quality (and usefulness) of the manuals. that'll be .02 cents -- dh
I saw the beta of StarOffice 6.0 at the January Linux Expo in NY and I was extremely impressed. I wouldn't mind paying a reasonable price for this office suite, if it does what the version at the show portended. Why do you want everything for nothing? If a program is worth something, why should you not pay for it? How much work do _you_ do for nothing? --doug At 12:44 04/30/2002 +0200, Joe Sullivan wrote:
