i've seen this before; at certain times, the openSUSE versions of calibre don't start; must have something to do with library versions they depend on. usually, after a while (new calibre version in the repo) it works again. at present mine works, on openSUSE 12.1, calibre installed from KDE:/Distro:/Factory, version calibre-0.8.23-1.41.x86_64. a few times, when oS versions didn't work, i installed it from it's creator's website: http://calibre-ebook.com/download_linux the disadvantage is that it comes without an un-installer, which the author claims is the distro's business to provide. but almost everything installs into /opt, and after installation there's a list of file changes which one can use to undo those changes outside of /opt. not very nice, but in my experience it's been working reliably, unlike the oS version, which goes off once in a while. -- phani. -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

IIRC, this is due to the fact that your Calibre version is too old. In any case the pristine version[1] will work in all cases since it uses private versions of all dependencies. As an aside there is also pandoc[2]. However, you might have to compile the Haskell Platform[3] yourself due to an older version of it shipped with OpenSUSE (at least for 11.4, don't know about 12.1). If you want Calibre to just work, forget about any opensuse branded stuff. Simply go here: http://calibre-ebook.com/download_linux then triple click on the line... 'sudo python -c . . .' and copy that. then open a root terminal and paste it in and hit enter. It'll ask for a password and suggested folder for calibre at which you simply hit enter. Then wait. It'll download and install then tell you to close any running calibre and restart it. You should select a folder to download all your epubs to such as /home/Downloads/eBooks and they will automatically be dumped into calibre. you can doenload pdfs and other formatt and comvert them to epub or one of other formats. You can also explode any epub and edit it with something like Sigil, then restore the epub with the changes. I've been doing that for at least 3 years and it works beautifully. I don't know, perhaps because it's still wasteful, and I have better things to do with my RAM than having 45 versions of glibc loaded? Anders, there are users who simply want things to work and not spend their 'valuable' time trying to fix problems. I turned into one of those. I got tired of having to figure out how to get things to work using Yast. So my info is not FUD but practicality. If anyone wants to figure out why a particular app wont work, let 'em. If they want to have something work without all that heartache, let 'em have the alternative. If you insist on opensuse only for the purists then you're going to have very small audience. The rest will go elsewhere. I started using SuSE back on ver 6 and went thru that learning curve. Now I just want things to work so I can enjoy other things. Of all the distros I still think suse is the best one even with all its zits. It's getting around the zits that's tough, especially when others keep on putting in more zits. BTW, I started using Calibre with 10.1 and have used it up thru 11.4. Using Goyal's recommended install has never failed to give me a working Calibre regardless of what Yast installed. It even worked on Ubuntu. That's not FUD that's reality. Richard -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

Agreed, Calibre is just astoundingly good software. Click that HEART button once in a while. I've never understood people complaining about Thunderbird 3 when 12 was out, or running ancient Calibre releases when a mouse click gets you a new one. Its all Python for pete sake, and the installer works perfectly. There is nothing wrong with getting packages directly from sources you trust, and mindlessly sticking to official distribution sites is pretty much contrary to the whole purpose of linux. -- _____________________________________ ---This space for rent--- -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org To contact the owner, e-mail: opensuse+owner@opensuse.org

And what incompatible libraries do I have installed? I simply installed calibre from the oss repo, and it chose what dependencies to install. All the python deps it wanted came from the oss repo, except "podofo" that came from kde stable repo.

I might, but as I already have the upstream version of calibre running, to what end should I report? I can no longer test if the openSUSE version of calibre for 11.4 works. The Calibre manual is correct, the author does not provide any info on how to defeat DRM but... others have done so. It has been a while since I found the key, but googling on nook drm defeat got me a passle of sites and info. "I heart cabbages" is one starting place. It will eventually lead you to a site that has a file labeled tools_v4.8.zip. It has all the tools/files you need to get the job done. Open it and you'll see folders for whatever you need. You will need the same info you use to buy a nook book or kindle so the app can decrypt it. All you need to know is in that zip file's readme. As far as Nook is concerned, you must have the file installed correctly BEFORE you download the book to calibre, then it automatically decrypts it for you. The plugin file will be a .zip file. Dont make the mistake of unzipping that file. I wish I could point you directly to the tools file but dont remember that far back. It's nice to be able to read the Nook books on my laptop. After the drm is removed you still can read the book in your Nook. Life can be simpler if you work at it. If you need more info, contact me directly.
