[opensuse] DVD Drive Problem
Hi, it seems I got a (pretty strange) problem with my CD/DVD Burner. If I look into the hardware-information of YAST the drive is identified as DVD_RW_IDE1108 and all seems ok. The strange problem, now, is that I can only read CDs but no DVDs. Before I installed SUSE 10.2 (I had a 10.1 installed back then) all worked perfectly well. This whole problem turns out to be pretty nasty for I backuped about 30 GB of data on several DVDs before I installed 10.2 (because it was time to clean up the whole mess on my HD I decided that a new, fresh and nice installation would be the perfect time to do some additional cleaning as well.) Now, I cannot access ANY DVD anymore(though I can access these DVDs on other PCs, I checked this already.) It would be nice if anybody were able to solve the problem o at least give me some workaround. Thanks in advance Sebastian -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
Sorry, I forgot to check one simple thing: if I can mount the DVDs manually (via console) or not. Mounting them per console (like in 'mount /dev/hdb /mnt') is actually no problem. In my humble opinion this indicates that the problem is related to the automounting mechnism or something in that fashion. Though I may be pretty wrong wih that guess for I am no Linux expert; I am just a mere user and nothing more. So once again, if anybody knows the (possible) reason for my problem, I would be glad to try out the solutions offered to me. Sebastian

What exactly happens when you insert a dvd? Does it pop up a new Kong window? When you say you can't read a dvd, what are the exact symptoms? Also, in Kde Configure Desktop, Personal Settings, Peripherals Storage Media Notifications tab Medium Types set to Unmounted DVD What functions are listed in the white box (Mine has open in a new window and Do Nothing). -- _____________________________________ John Andersen
Hi, the problem is that absolutely nothing is happening. I am using Gnome as a GUI and after I insert a DVD nothing happens, no Nautilus pops up or anything in that way. Even stranger is that if I look at "computer:///" I see the icon for the file system and for the network. Usually the CD-RW/DVD-RW icon can be found there too. In the moment I insert a DVD the icon for the CD-RW/DVD-RW Drive disappears. If I insert a CD all works quite normal. The CD-RW/DVD-RW icons does not disappear and after a second a new nautilus window pops up and shows me the content of the CD. BUT, as I posted before, I can mount DVDs (and read them) if I use the 'mount' command in the console. I can type in 'mount /dev/hdb /mnt' and after that there is no problem reading the content of the DVD (in the /mnt directory) via nautilus. Sebastian

I have a similar problem right now, usually it's a dvd reader failure. For any reason it can't anymore read dvd's. to be sure, any bootable cd/dvd... jdd -- http://www.dodin.net http://dodin.org/mediawiki/index.php/GPS_Lowrance_GO -- To unsubscribe, e-mail: opensuse+unsubscribe@opensuse.org For additional commands, e-mail: opensuse+help@opensuse.org
Yeah, I guessed the same thing at first. But I had to dismiss the idea for the simple reason that I can mount and read DVDs via console without a problem (and I can boot from bootable DVDs). So this cannot be the problem. The hardware is totally correct. (And by the way, it would be a quite strange coincidence, that exactly after the installation of openSUSE 10.2 my DVD-Drive got jiggered.)

you should answer under the part of a message you answer to, if not the discussion is not understandable But I had to dismiss the idea for the

so an hal problem (the automount feature)
