Re: [SuSE Linux] SuSE updates...

I can see the reasoning that if new updates are available, and TESTED that there is no reason why they shouldn't be put on a new master. But a standard operating procedure is when software developers change code, or even just a comment in a Makefile somewhere, they up a version number. Why should the distribution as a whole be any different.
I just went to the ftp.suse.com site to do an "update". There are 236 updated packages, based on what I already installed from my SuSE 6.1 CDROM. Does that mean they have found 236 bugs in the 6.1 distribution? Then how come I don't find nearly that many known bugs listed in the support database?
This only means, we have fixed a bug or update on package, on which a lot of other packages depend. If we fix a bug in gettext, all packages depending on gettext will be rebuild. The same for things like ncurses. And if we fix a bug in kde-libs or kde-base, over 200 packages (all KDE packages) will be rebuild. This is to make sure the bugfix goes in all packages.
It looks to me like SuSE is just blindly grabbing new packages and sticking them in the 6.1 distribution. And if I assume that testing takes only
This couldn't be, because a lot of people complain that we are using old versions.
4 hours per update, that means they should have been testing 118 days for these updates that appeared over a course of less than one month. So the only conclusion is they are NOT in anyway testing the distribution as a while remains stable as they update it.

Was it not just last week that everyone was ranting and raving on how wonderful SuSE is? Now everyone is bitching and moaning cause SuSE is doing their job. Of course they are going to address problems as they arise, and give out the best distro at the present time. <sarcastic>Why not complain because SuSE 6.1 doesnt include kernel 2.2.9-ac1?</sarcastic> -- JFWilkus [tflat] ICQ-10933411 astrocreep.mosquitonet.com SuSE Linux 6.1 Kernel 2.2.9 North Pole, AK -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A</A>> and the archive at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A</A>>

I think it's ridiculous that everyone is complaining about this crap. First they complain that they don't get their subscription fast enough now they complain that they don't get the updated version. Grow up people. I'm sick of my mailbox being crammed with dumb complaints about this. And i shouldn't have to make a filter to get rid of it either because i still have to waste bandwith on it. rimez -- To get out of this list, please send email to majordomo@suse.com with this text in its body: unsubscribe suse-linux-e Check out the SuSE-FAQ at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A">http://www.suse.com/Support/Doku/FAQ/</A</A>> and the archive at <A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html"><A HREF="http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A">http://www.suse.com/Mailinglists/suse-linux-e/index.html</A</A>>
